Happy Valley star Mark Stanley, who plays Rob Hepworth on the show, shared insights into his character on today's Sunday Brunch on Channel 4.

He was talking about his role and the show and the way the show is made. He praised the show's creator Sally Wainwright for her scripts and ability to tell stories.

When asked about rumours Sally Wainwright did not like her cast improvising, he said: "It depends, if it's justified then it's all up for conversation but you don't need to.

"You don't need to. Her stuff's there, it's on the page."

While on the show, he also gave some insight into his character Rob. In one subplot on the show, abusive PE teacher Rob Hepworth is shown to not care when his wife goes missing and to have locks on everything, including the fridge, at home.

Mark said: "He is someone who definitely struggles with control issues."

He added: "I think he has to diminish people in order to elevate himself and that's got to come from something that's lacking in himself."

You can watch Happy Valley on BBC One at 9pm tonight.
