Blog Update: September 1, 2024 Hey everyone! Just wanted to check in and give you all a quick update on what's been going on lately. Let's dive in!

Manchester United suffered a disappointing 3-0 loss against their arch-rivals, Liverpool, in a forgettable match at Old Trafford.

Luis Diaz scored two goals in the first half, following Trent Alexander-Arnold's early shot being disallowed by VAR. Mohamed Salah, who always causes problems for us, scored a third goal. All of the goals were a result of expensive mistakes in giving away possession.

Following the introduction of Manuel Ugarte as our new signing on deadline day to the fans, Matthijs de Ligt and Joshua Zirkzee also made their first starts for the team. They had joined us in the summer from Bayern Munich, but unfortunately, the event did not go as we had anticipated.

Joshua Zirkzee had the most promising chances for United with two attempts on goal.

The first part of the blog discusses how Diaz's two goals have impacted the Reds' chances of winning.

United began the game enthusiastically, fueled by the enthusiasm of our dedicated fans, but were unable to create any significant scoring opportunities against Alisson in the opposing team's goal.

Suddenly, Liverpool launched their first notable offensive move, which appeared to result in a goal. Ryan Gravenberch made a run into open space to pass to Diaz, whose cross deflected off Salah before Alexander-Arnold took his shot. The ball crossed the line before Diogo Dalot could intervene, and the English defender excitedly celebrated by kissing the TV camera. Unfortunately, his celebration was premature as VAR determined that Salah was offside when Diaz passed the ball.

Erik ten Hag's team got lucky when Gravenberch intercepted Casemiro's pass and set up a goal for Diaz at the 35th minute. The match remained evenly matched for a while before this breakthrough moment. There weren't many scoring opportunities, but the game was still entertaining. Salah's cross found Diaz at the far post, giving Liverpool the lead in a five-on-three situation. Szoboszlai couldn't stop the ball from going in.

The Reds had a chance to score in the first half, but Alisson couldn't hold on to the ball. Noussair Mazraoui managed to score a goal by shooting the ball through Virgil van Dijk's legs after Bruno Fernandes passed it to him. Luckily, there were players in white shirts there to block the shot.

The situation deteriorated when Casemiro was knocked down by Diaz in the 42nd minute. Many spectators thought a free-kick would be given, but referee Anthony Taylor allowed play to continue. Salah then set up Diaz for a goal with a quick finish that beat Andre Onana. Upon reviewing the play, it was clear that Diaz touched the ball during the challenge, so VAR was not expected to step in.

The second half was a challenging 45 minutes for the United team.

Toby Collyer came on for Casemiro during half-time to have his first ever game in the Premier League. One of his initial actions was to head the ball down for Zirkzee, who took a shot that was saved by Alisson.

Alexander-Arnold tried to shoot, but De Ligt blocked it. The referee had already raised the offside flag anyway. But soon after, a third goal was scored, making it clear that the result was pretty much sealed. MacAllister was able to overpower Mainoo and set up Salah for a precise finish, easily getting past Onana.

Salah had two more opportunities very quickly, shooting over the goal before his shot was deflected off Dalot inside the penalty area.

Zirkzee missed two good opportunities to score, both set up by Marcus Rashford. The first chance was saved by Alisson, and the second shot missed the goal. In between, Liverpool's substitute, Cody Gakpo, missed a header, and Lisandro Martinez almost scored with an overhead kick off Amad's cross.

That was one of the highlights from a disappointing day at Old Trafford, as Arne Slot's team secured their third consecutive win in the Premier League campaign.

United will be facing Southampton on 14 September after the international break begins.
