Last month, the reigning Premier League champions announced that Txiki Begiristain would be stepping down as Manchester City’s Director of Football after 12 years at the club, marking the conclusion of a highly successful era in his position.

A lot of fans believe that Begiristain has been instrumental in Manchester City's impressive achievements since the Abu Dhabi United Group took control in 2008. They credit him with playing a major part in bringing Pep Guardiola on board as the team's head coach.

Although he initially thought about stepping down from his role as Manchester City’s sporting director five years ago, he chose to stay because of the exciting project and the pleasure of collaborating with Guardiola. Now, however, Begiristain has decided to depart at the conclusion of the current season.

The club acted quickly to plan their next moves, and it is reported that Txiki Begiristain was directly involved in finding and selecting the new Director of Football. The choice was Hugo Viana from Sporting Lisbon, who has now been appointed to the role.

In a recent press conference ahead of the match, Pep Guardiola, the manager of Etihad Stadium, mentioned that although he hasn't had a direct conversation with the Portuguese official yet, Viana has already been in communication with Manchester City.

"No, not at this time. Not just yet," Guardiola responded when questioned about whether he had talked with the 41-year-old, who is set to take over from Txiki Begiristain at the conclusion of the current 2024/25 season.

“I’m aware he’s been communicating with the club, but there’s nothing finalized yet,” Guardiola concluded. He is still considering his future at Manchester City as his contract approaches its end, and it’s understood that the transition in the sporting director role won’t affect his choice.

At this point, Manchester City is still waiting for manager Pep Guardiola to make a decision about his long-term future with the team. His current contract is due to end at the conclusion of this season.

Initially, it was thought that Txiki Begiristain and Guardiola would leave the club simultaneously. However, it has recently become clear that Begiristain's departure won't affect Guardiola's long-awaited decision regarding his future.
