On Saturday, Manchester United faced an unexpected defeat in their home turf as minnows Bournemouth won with a surprising 3-0 victory. This marks United's first time experiencing a defeat at home against Bournemouth.
The players of Erik ten Hag performed very poorly during the match, to the extent that they could have been defeated even more brutally. The final score was already very disappointing and it caused a negative reaction from the audience, who expressed their dissatisfaction through boos at the end of the game.
Ten Hag is under increasing pressure, according to a blog, and the captain of United, Fernandes, stated that the players are responsible for the team's poor performance.
"I would like to express my remorse for the display. It was unsatisfactory, beginning with myself. I am not referring to anyone besides me," he stated.
In my opinion, all of us in the changing room are in agreement that our performance was either inadequate or did not meet our expectations, and we need to improve significantly.
The quality, effort, and level of aggression during the game were lacking compared to our previous match against Chelsea.
"If you fail to perform your duties, you will not emerge victorious in the game."
United has had an inconsistent season so far, losing in 11 out of their total of 23 matches across all competitions.
After the Bournemouth matchup, Ten Hag acknowledged that he didn't think his team possessed the necessary abilities to maintain a consistent performance at the top tier.
Fernandes expressed his confusion about why United can't seem to keep up a consistent performance.
"I'm unsure as to why it was so unlike Chelsea, but it has been consistently this way," Fernandes stated to MUTV.
After triumphing in a match, we tend to underperform in the subsequent match like how we did previously.
I'm not sure if it's due to a deficit in attention or concentration, or maybe something else entirely. Regardless, we must keep in mind that once we win a game, we need to maintain a constant winning streak.
"Occasionally, we may not be performing at our best, but still achieve the desired outcome."
Manchester United is running out of time to come up with a plan before they face Bayern Munich in a crucial match on Tuesday. They must win this game to advance to the next round of the Champions League. Even if they do win, they will only move forward if the Copenhagen and Galatasaray match ends in a tie.
After that, there is a visit to Liverpool in the Premier League next Sunday, but Fernandes will be absent as he received a fifth booking of the season in the match against Bournemouth.
"Clearly, we are aware that the upcoming match will pose a significant challenge," Fernandes expressed.
We need to come out on top and also hope for a positive outcome in the other match in order to succeed.
We must prioritize our responsibilities and recognize that the upcoming challenge will be difficult for us.
"We have the potential and the necessary skills to produce the desired outcome."
