Two scores from Luis Díaz and one from Mohamed Salah led Liverpool to an easy 3-0 win against Manchester United in the Premier League on Sunday. Erik ten Hag's team was defeated by their strong rivals.
Liverpool controlled the game against United in the first half, with the visitors scoring the opening goal in the 35th minute. Diaz found the back of the net with a header after United's Casemiro made a mistake and lost possession of the ball.
Casemiro was once again to blame for Diaz and Liverpool's second goal, which was set up again by Mohamed Salah. The Colombia international scored three minutes before halftime, causing United fans to head for their halftime snacks early.
United was struggling, and Liverpool could sense an opportunity to dominate. Salah scored a goal eleven minutes into the second half, securing a third goal for Liverpool. The visitors ended the game with a 3-0 victory, keeping their perfect record under new coach Arne Slot intact.
United captain Bruno Fernandes said to Sky Sports that the goals they concede are always their own fault. He stressed that they need to make a mistake in order for the opposing team to score. He added that it is not productive to blame others and that they need to focus on improving as a team.
"When a goal is scored against us, we can't just blame one error. Dwelling on the past won't help us. What we need to do is change our approach. The game didn't go in our favor, so credit to Liverpool for being more efficient. I'm not focused on the statistics, but it was a close match."
Following a successful summer in signing new players and changes in leadership, fans of United were brought back to reality with a disappointing loss to Brighton and Hove Albion last week. This defeat highlighted the continued need for enhancements on the field.
The upcoming match against Liverpool on Sunday was a big worry for many because Liverpool had only lost one out of their last 12 games against United in the Premier League.
The fans who were feeling negative or doubtful were worried as Trent Alexander-Arnold seemed to have scored a goal for Liverpool at Old Trafford. However, VAR intervened and ruled Salah to be offside earlier in the play, saving the hosts.
United didn't create many chances to score against Liverpool. This gave Liverpool the opportunity to choose when they wanted to attack.
Casemiro's mistake made it easy for the Slot's team to score against their opponents. With Diaz scoring the final goal, Liverpool got off to a good start.
Diaz scored his third goal of the season, which was another impressive finish. However, Casemiro will want to forget his mistake. The speedy Liverpool attacker has now scored more goals in the Premier League against United than any other team.
Another error in the middle of the field, this one by Kobbie Mainoo, was quickly taken advantage of by Salah in the second part of the game. The Egyptian solidified his position as the top-scoring opposing player at Old Trafford in Premier League history with seven goals.
The guests went on to win, making Slot the initial Liverpool manager to defeat United in their first encounter since Bob Paisley in November 1975. He is also just the second manager to achieve this away from home after George Kay in November 1936.
