Malcolm in the Middle is the newest cherished TV series to be given a fresh update.

As reported by Variety, the popular sitcom, which was developed by Linwood Boomer, will be getting a reboot on Disney+. Original cast members Frankie Muniz, Bryan Cranston, and Jane Kaczmarek are all returning to their former roles.

In the reboot's description, it mentions that Malcolm (played by Muniz) and his daughter get caught up in the family's turmoil when Hal (Cranston) and Lois (Kaczmarek) insist that he attend their 40th wedding anniversary celebration.

Although the exact release date is not known yet, the streaming service has commissioned four additional episodes of the revived series.

“Malcolm in the Middle is a groundbreaking comedy that perfectly embodies the realities of family life, blending humor and genuine emotion,” said Ayo Davis, president of Disney Branded Television, in a statement to Variety. “The show’s funny and sincere depiction of a wonderfully messy family struck a chord with viewers across generations, and we’re thrilled to have the original cast return to revive that special charm.”

Under the guidance of Linwood Boomer and the talented creative team, the upcoming episodes promise to deliver all the humor, antics, and chaos that fans cherished, while also introducing some unexpected twists that highlight the show's enduring appeal.

"Malcolm in the Middle" was broadcast on Fox from 2000 to 2006, spanning seven seasons. The main cast included Muniz, Cranston, Kaczmarek, Justin Berfield, Erik Per Sullivan, and Christopher Masterson. This unique comedy series, filmed with a single camera setup, centered around Malcolm, a brilliant young boy, and his chaotic working-class family. Throughout its seven-season run, the show received seven Emmy Awards from a total of 33 nominations.

"Malcolm in the Middle had a profound impact on TV comedy when it first aired twenty years ago, reshaping the possibilities within the genre," stated Karey Burke, president of 20th Television. "When Linwood Boomer proposed the idea of reuniting this beloved, quirky family, we realized there couldn’t be a more legendary and significant show to bring back, along with its incredibly talented cast."

The original creator, Boomer, is coming back as a writer and executive producer. Breaking Bad's Bryan Cranston will join him in the role of executive producer.

Malcolm in the Middle is joining the list of shows making a comeback on television. Just last week, it was revealed that a reboot of the popular US medical comedy Scrubs is officially in the works, despite facing some production hurdles. Bill Lawrence, the show's creator, has an exclusive agreement with Warner Bros TV, even though Scrubs is produced by Disney's 20th Television.

Recent reports indicate that Lawrence is in the process of creating the show in collaboration with ABC Studios, as reported by Variety.

In October, he shared an exciting update, suggesting that they were “very close to finalizing the show.”
