Noni Madueke: Chelsea agree £29m deal to sign PSV Eindhoven ...

19 Jan 2023

Chelsea have agreed a £29m deal in principle with PSV Eindhoven to sign winger Noni Madueke.

There are still final details to sort out in the deal but the player is preparing to travel to England.

Madueke started his youth career at Crystal Palace before moving to Tottenham.

He left Spurs in 2018 for PSV Eindhoven, establishing himself as a first-team regular in the 2020-21 campaign and scoring nine goals in 35 games last season.

There was a feeling PSV would not want to sell him because they already sold Cody Gakpo to Liverpool this window, but it is understood Chelsea were very insistent.

The deal will take Chelsea's spending in this window to £190m, having already spent £270m in the summer, and to £460m since Todd Boehly took over the club.

Madueke will become Chelsea's sixth signing of the January transfer window, following the arrivals of Mykhailo Mudryk, Joao Felix, Benoit Badiashile, David Datro Fofana and Andrey Santos.

'Chelsea going in first and snapping up talented young players'

Sky Sports News' Kaveh Solhekol on The Transfer Show:

"We could go on and on about how many player Chelsea have signed. There's been lots of debate about how they're going to comply with various Financial Fair Play rules.

"It'll be interesting to see how long this contract is. We've seen Chelsea sign players on five, six, seven, eight-year contracts to spread out the cost of the deals in order to comply with UEFA and Premier League FFP rules. That's one to look out for.

Mudryk's eight-year deal? Chelsea's long contracts explained

"I anticipate this will again be a very long-term deal.

"These are some of the best young players in Europe and what's happened is a lot of clubs have been watching them.

"Since the new owners have come into Chelsea, they are making the first move, going in and buying all these players and leaving everyone else standing.

"Madueke is very highly rated. Most of the big clubs in Europe have been watching him, but again, Chelsea are the ones who made the first move and put the money on the table.

"It looks like they're going to get him because a deal has been agreed in principle."

Analysis: Madueke is one for the future

European football expert Andy Brassell on Transfer Show:

"I don't think Chelsea supporters can expect too much immediately from him because he's had a quiet time this season. If you go back to the season before last, you saw all of his potential. He started that season brilliantly, scored goals in Champions League qualifiers - in some really tough matches.

"At that point, you felt he would end up in the Premier League within a year. But it's been tougher for him. He's had a lot of little injuries since then that have held him up.

"With the offer, they're not really losing anything from their first team right now PSV. The potential is obvious, the ability is obvious. It wouldn't shock me if he were to go out on loan immediately given the number of forward players that Chelsea have got, and dribblers.

"If you're looking at Chelsea building a sustainable future. I have sympathy with the point of view they're buying everyone this window, but on the other hand they're getting a player who looks like he can be the real deal at below market value.

"Everyone was looking at him after his form a couple of years ago and at that point, £30m would've seemed an absolute bargain - and of course, he's another English player to go into that squad."

What to expect from 'showman' Madueke

What can Premier League audiences expect from Madueke? Let's leave it to the young man himself to explain. "I am a bit of a showman," he told Sky Sports in April. "I try to beat players. I am fast. I have an eye for goal. That is how I would describe myself."

During that interview, he explained the reasoning behind his PSV move. "I have been in a first-team environment since I was 17. I don't think there is any way I would have experienced first-team football at that age in England. It just felt like the right next step."

Madueke has developed significantly in the Netherlands, having experienced playing alongside Mario Gotze and being coached by Roger Schmidt and Ruud van Nistelrooy. He describes his game as "a bit more polished" than when he first arrived.

"When you are 18 coming into the first team you are a bit raw. I am probably a more decisive player than I was two years ago. My biggest strengths are still my speed and my dribbling but I would say that my end product is good as well now."
