Sun, sea, sex and… smoking? Er, not quite.

Love Island may seem like an extended holiday for its stars, but they do have to follow some rules.

The second ever winter installment of the show launched last night, with brand new host Maya Jama’s debut kicking off the series with a bang.

Over the years several contestants have been removed from the villa over the years for breaking rules – which include using appropriate and non-offensive language at all times.

But are the islanders allowed to smoke – and drink alcohol – on the show?

Here’s what we know.

Can Love Island contestants drink alcohol in the villa?

Yes, the Islanders can drink- they all enjoyed a glass or two of prosecco during the launch show -but they are limited.

Unlike some reality TV hits (ahem, Geordie Shore), Love Island stars aren’t allowed to get sloshed on the show.

One previous contestant revealed that there’s a two-drink maximum each day, and the type of beverage is carefully considered.

Amy Hart, who appeared on series five in 2019, told The Sun: ‘So it’s definitely one drink in the night and you have to order it in the afternoon. You can have like white wine, red wine, beer.

‘I think for every one glass of wine you can get two two beers because they are little cans. That was it. There was no spirits or anything. You could have a glass of prosecco actually. But it’s like Spanish prosecco.

‘It’s one drink and if it’s a particularly long night you get a second drink.’

Amy added that she supports the decision to limit islanders’ alcohol intake.

She said: ‘I am of the camp that it’s a really good idea that you don’t have that much to drink because so many rows kicked off in the villa, I’m like imagine that with a skin full of alcohol.’

A spokesperson for the show said in 2016: ‘We provide our islanders with all of the necessary precautionary measures and all alcohol consumption is strictly monitored by our production team.’

So that’s why there are no drunken antics on Love Island.

Can Love Island contestants smoke cigarettes or vape?

Cigarette smoking isn’t completely barred on Love Island – but it is restricted.

Early seasons frequently featured islanders smoking together, often having ‘heart to hearts’ or dramatic chats over a ciggie.

But ITV are said to have cracked down on smoking scenes after receiving multiple complaints.

From the 2019 series onwards, islanders are still allowed to smoke – but away from the villa (and the cameras) in a ‘designated smoking area’.

Islanders aren’t allowed to smoke in groups, either, to discourage social smoking – and presumably, so important conversations between contestants can still be shown on screen.

ITV confirmed to Metro.co.uk that the same rules apply to vaping.

What else is banned in the Love Island villa?

Swearing is allowed, but using inappropriate or offensive language is a complete no-go.

Reports also say contestants are discouraged from wandering around the villa nude – as it is seen as a public place, given all the cameras. Yep, even in the shower.

Masturbation is also disallowed – and islanders are said to be given a ‘handbook’ advising them on dos and don’ts for their time on the series, as well as sexual consent.

Winter Love Island 2023 continues tonight at 9pm on ITVX and the ITV Hub.
