Louis Kimber: Leicestershire batter hits Sussex & England bowler Ollie Robinson for 43 in over in County Championship

Louis Kimber

Crucial County Championship Division 2 match at the 1st Central County Ground in Hove (fourth day)

Sussex scored 442 runs and declared at 296-6. Alsop finished with 81 not out and Hunt contributed 65 runs, while Currie took 2 wickets for 28 runs.

In the recent cricket match, Leicestershire scored 275 and 445 runs in their two innings. Kimber was the top scorer with 243 runs. Coles took 3 wickets for 95 runs, while Carson also took 3 wickets for 99 runs.

Sussex won against Leicestershire by a margin of 18 runs, earning 23 points while Leicestershire earned 4 points.

Ollie Robinson, a quick bowler from England, was hit for 43 runs by Louis Kimber in the most costly over ever in the County Championship. Despite this, Sussex managed to hold on and defeat Leicestershire.

Robinson was hit for eight boundaries out of nine deliveries by Kimber from Leicestershire during the last day of their match at Hove. Three of those boundaries were due to no-balls.

However, despite Kimber, who is 27 years old, breaking numerous records with an incredible innings of 243, it was not enough to secure a victory as Division Two leaders Sussex ultimately won by a close margin of 18 runs.

He was the last player to get out when he unintentionally hit a ball from Nathan McAndrew onto his stumps, leaving only the last player, Josh Hull, remaining.

"We don't experience many days like that in our careers, it was truly incredible," Kimber shared with BBC Radio Leicester. "It's disappointing that we couldn't achieve our goal in the end, but you have to appreciate moments like that personally."

"My phone keeps vibrating with notifications and I've achieved some impressive accomplishments. All my teammates at Sussex have reached out to congratulate me and reassured me that I contributed positively even in our loss."

Robinson's over is thought to be the costliest in all of first-class cricket when the bowler does not follow the rules (i.e. bowling for a declaration).

Kimber's accomplishment is easily the highest number of runs scored by a player in a single over of English first-class cricket.

Surrey and England player Alex Tudor allowed Lancashire's Andrew Flintoff to score 38 runs in one over back in 1998. This record was matched recently by Surrey’s Dan Lawrence who scored 38 runs off the bowling of England player Shoaib Bashir.

Robinson is looking to have a big impact on England's Test team this summer, especially now that Jimmy Anderson has retired after the first game against West Indies at Lord's on July 10th.

Kimber smashed five balls over the boundary for six runs, hit three shots that reached the boundary for four runs, and scored one single during the memorable over in Wednesday morning's game.

Out of the six times he hit the ball over the boundary, only two were legitimate sixes. The other three were from no-ball deliveries.

In the County Championship, hitting a no-ball gives you two runs. This meant that the boundary shots turned into sixes when he hit all three no-balls to the ropes.

Kimber hits the ball to the fielder at backward square leg and scores six runs.

Second ball: Robinson was sent to a similar position, this time for four runs, and it was also a no-ball (six no-balls).

Ball 3: Kimber hits a bouncer towards the third man boundary for another four runs.

Fourth delivery: Kimber hits another six by pulling the ball well over the fielder stationed at backward square leg.

Ball 5: Another powerful hit to the square leg region, earning four (4) runs.

Robinson hit the ball towards the off-side boundary for his fourth four in the over. This was also the second time the bowler bowled a no-ball. Kimber reached his century in a stylish way by hitting the ball for six runs.

Ball 7: Kimber didn't hit the ball perfectly, but she managed to find a gap at mid-on and score four runs.

Ball 8: The bowler overstepped again, resulting in a beautiful shot through the cover region for four runs.

Ball 9: Kimber attempted another pull shot, but this time it went straight to a fielder, resulting in just one run.

Kimber played his first professional cricket match in March of 2019.

Prior to this match, his highest score in first-class cricket was 104, and he had only reached the milestone of scoring a century twice for the top team, with the other occasion occurring in 50-over matches.

However, he managed to score 141 runs from 120 balls while batting first in a second team match against Notts earlier in the month.

In the game against Sussex, in addition to setting a new record for the most runs scored in a single over in the Championship by hitting Robinson's deliveries all over the park, he also achieved other impressive milestones.

Kimber achieved the quickest double hundred in the Championship by scoring it in just 100 balls, breaking the previous record of 123 balls set by Aneurin Donald for Glamorgan against Derbyshire in 2016.

His 21 sixes surpassed Ben Stokes' previous record of 17 set for Durham against Worcestershire in 2022.

Leicestershire started the last morning with a score of 139-5, still needing 325 runs to win with only five wickets left. Kimber was cautious at first.

He made 26 runs from his first 30 balls, and then went on to attack off-spinner Jack Carson, hitting him for 20 runs in one over. This helped him reach a half-century in just 37 balls.

Kimber and Ben Cox put together an impressive partnership of 239 runs in 27 overs. This broke the previous Leicestershire eighth-wicket record. Unfortunately, their stand came to an end when Robinson bowled an in-swinger to dismiss Cox.

After Ben Mike made a easy catch to mid-off, Leicestershire needed 29 runs to win and Kimber had to take a risk. He hit his 21st six off Robinson over long on, but McAndrew got the better of him in the following over.

Paul Farbrace, the head coach of Sussex, expressed his relief and admiration for the incredible performance of the batsman who hit 21 sixes. He remarked that it felt like even more than 41 due to the impact of the player's record-breaking feat. Farbrace also praised his team's exceptional display during the session after lunch, where they managed to take the last three wickets with great skill and professionalism.
