Sophie Helps Yazidi Genocide Survivor
The Duchess of Edinburgh honored the courage of those who survived the Yazidi genocide while highlighting the severe impact of sexual violence linked to conflict.
Sophie was seen with her arm around Awaz Abdi, who was taken captive by the group known as Islamic State (IS) in Iraq ten years ago when he was only 10 years old.
In 2014, ISIS, commonly referred to as Daesh, launched a violent assault on the Yazidis, an ancient religious community in northern Iraq. During this attack, they killed thousands of people and kidnapped around 7,000 women and children in the Sinjar area. The group carried out numerous atrocious acts, forcing women and girls into sexual slavery and other forms of exploitation, while compelling boys to take up arms as child soldiers.
In a heartfelt address, Sophie honored the courage of Yazidi genocide survivors, including Ms. Abdi. She emphasized that more needs to be done to stop violence from occurring globally.
Sophie remarked, "I believe it wasn't until members of the Yazidi community shared their experiences that a large number of people around the globe became aware of this horrific tragedy."
The duchess stated: "However, we are aware that the horrors will carry on, and the destruction caused by sexual violence related to conflict persists. It doesn't end just because the fighting stops; the impact continues to affect the lives of those who have endured."
