Virgil van Dijk is still unsure about his future as the Liverpool captain has not made any progress towards agreeing to a new contract.

The Dutch player is now in the final year of his contract with Liverpool, which means they could potentially lose him for free next summer if they don't come to an agreement. Despite expressing his happiness at the club in May, there has been little movement in negotiations for an extension.

"We haven't made any changes yet," stated the 33-year-old who is one of the three key players whose contracts are set to expire at the end of the season, along with vice-captain Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah.

Liverpool is the sole team in the Premier League that has not made any new signings this summer. Van Dijk is of the opinion that they could benefit from adding some new players to the squad.

Liverpool are eyeing Spain midfielder Martin Zubimendi, who has a release clause of £51m in his contract with Real Sociedad. However, he has not informed the Basque club of his desire to depart yet.

Van Dijk also mentioned that he believes the club will make new signings as needed for the upcoming season. He trusts that the club is working hard behind the scenes to create a strong team that can compete in all competitions.

"That's my main priority right now, building trust and seeing where things go. I believe they are putting in a lot of effort behind the scenes, so we'll have to wait and see how it all turns out."

Liverpool ended up in third place in the Premier League last season and managed to secure victories in the Carabao Cup. Van Dijk is setting ambitious goals for the upcoming season with new manager Arne Slot at the helm.

He said: "We strive to reach our maximum potential, that's our goal. I have goals, we all have goals. We all aim to achieve our very best. We're entering every competition with the goal of winning. It may be difficult, but we are prepared for the Premier League to begin and hopefully improve as the season progresses and perform excellently."
