Sonia Bompastor on Liverpool win: Confidence and positivity
Blues head coach Sonia Bompastor expressed her thoughts on the team's 3-0 victory over Liverpool in the Women's Super League. She talked about the boost in confidence this win brings, the importance of breaking their streak without a win against the Merseyside team, and how they aim to maintain their strong start to the season while also striving for further improvement.
Goals from Mayra Ramirez and Guro Reiten in the first half, along with a late goal from substitute Aggie Beever-Jones, secured the Blues their sixth straight win in the league.
The win in Merseyside not only maintains our flawless record, but it also marks Bompastor as the first manager to win their first four away games in the WSL. Additionally, this victory signifies the Blues' first away win against Liverpool since March 2019.
"I'm very happy with how we played today and the three points we earned," Bompastor remarked to reporters when they inquired about her thoughts on our strong beginning to the season during her post-match conference.
When I arrived at Chelsea, I was aware that I would be overseeing a team filled with skilled players and part of a club with significant aspirations.
In my opinion, my primary responsibility is to ensure that the players grasp our team's playing style and what I anticipate from them. Right now, thanks to our positive outcomes, they're feeling confident, which is great because it allows them to showcase their abilities on the pitch.
Today's victory marks the end of a streak of losses for us in Merseyside against Liverpool, a topic that Bompastor was questioned about by the press. She explained, "I knew about that record, but I didn't mention it to my players before the match. I believe we're entering a new chapter and our dynamics have changed compared to last season."
We understood in advance that the match would be challenging. To achieve a positive outcome, we needed to deliver an excellent performance.
"We paid special attention to set-pieces since we recognized that it was one of their key strengths. Our efforts paid off, as we kept a clean sheet during the match. Although we gave away a few corners and free-kicks, our defense held strong, which aligns with our mindset of making it difficult for the other team."
As she mentioned prior to the match against Liverpool, Bompastor maintains that her team has even greater potential to showcase this season, despite their strong beginning.
"While we’ve had an ideal beginning with our results, points, and performances, it's essential to remember that we haven't secured any titles yet," Bompastor explained. "It's crucial for the players to have confidence, but we also need to stay grounded and realistic. My responsibility is to ensure we find that balance."
