Jon Rahm scored an impressive eight-under 63 to take a two-shot lead at the end of the first day of the LIV Golf UK tournament in Uttoxeter.

The ex-top-ranked player who has won two major championships has not won any tournaments since switching from the PGA Tour to the Saudi-backed circuit at the start of the 2024 season.

Rahm placed in seventh position at the recent Open Championship held at Royal Troon. He finished the tournament with a score of one under par, following a final round of three under 68.

The Spanish golfer performed well in Staffordshire on Friday, making eight birdies and no bogeys. This put him two shots ahead of American Andy Ogletree and Mexico's Abraham Ancer.

Previous winner of the Open, Cameron Smith, and English golfer Tyrrell Hatton are one stroke behind at five under par. Hatton made seven birdies, but also had a double bogey during his round.
