Bristol City appoint Oxford's Manning as head coach

Liam Manning

Liam Manning started out in non-professional football before moving on to become a coach for the youth academy at both West Ham and New York City. In 2020, he took on the position of manager for the Belgian team Lommel.

Bristol City has selected Liam Manning, formerly the head coach at Oxford United, to be their new head coach.

The new manager, aged 38, takes over from Nigel Pearson, who was fired last month due to the team's poor performance. The club was in 15th place in the Championship, having lost five out of their last seven games.

Manning departs Oxford positioned at second place in League One and are trailing behind the front-runner, Portsmouth by three points in the standings. Manning was at the helm of the club for only eight months before his departure.

Before, he was in charge of the Milton Keynes Dons football club and also managed a team from Belgium called Lommel.

Manning expressed his eagerness towards the excellent opportunity he has been given. He shared his excitement while signing a contract for three and a half years with Ashton Gate, remarking that he is looking forward to it. Manning made these statements while speaking on the Bristol City website.

"If you examine the club's goals and the means by which they plan to achieve them, I believe there is a great match and agreement with my personal goals and aspirations."

"Manning Fits Perfectly With Robins"

Manning will have Chris Hogg, his assistant from Oxford, helping him out at the Robins. He has made quite an impact as the new boss of U's, taking over from Karl Robinson in March when the club was sitting at 18th place in League One and dangerously close to getting relegated, just three points away.

Last season, he was able to help Oxford remain in the game by achieving two victories in their last three matches. Moreover, he was able to strategically plan an outstanding start for this season which led to the U's only losing two matches in the league since the beginning of the season.

According to Jon Lansdown, the Chairman of Bristol City, Liam is an excellent match for the club and the manner in which we want to play.

As demonstrated by his track record with MK Dons and Oxford United, he employs a highly meticulous method to coaching, elevating players and extracting their full potential.

Once we implemented the alteration, we immediately opted for Liam as our top pick. It's commendable how Oxford United handled the departure of someone who was truly excelling in their role. We appreciate their high level of professionalism.

U's Seek New Manager

Grant Ferguson, who is the chairman of Oxford, expressed that the team had permitted Manning to chat with Bristol City in a reluctant manner. He also mentioned that the club had attempted to hold onto him by doing everything possible.

CEO Tim Williams expressed his great disappointment, but assured that the search for a top-notch replacement for Liam has already commenced.

This club has amazing training amenities and an interesting prospect ahead - I am absolutely certain that we will receive a lot of interest regarding the position.

Craig Short, who is currently a coach for the first team, will be temporarily taking on the position of head coach for Oxford. He will be receiving help from Chris Hackett, a coach for the academy.

Following his arrival as the new manager of MK Dons in August 2021, Manning guided the team to secure a third-place finish in League One. Sadly, in the semi-finals of the play-offs, they were defeated by Wycombe Wanderers and thus, were knocked out of the competition.

In December of last year, he was fired from his job as a consequence of his poor performance. The club was situated second-to-last in the standings, having recorded only one victory in their previous 11 league matches.

Analysis Of Manning's Summertime Fling

, has recently announced that he will be stepping down from his role after 11 years. Jerome Sale, who has been providing commentary for Oxford United matches on BBC Radio Oxford for over a decade, has revealed that he will be retiring from his position.

Seven days ago, Oxford United achieved victory against Lincoln, shortening the gap to the League One lead by three points, and everything appeared to be going smoothly both on and off the field.

A week has gone by and the team's ranking remains the same, but there is chaos. Liam Manning's decision to leave as head coach after just 241 days has upset fans - and based on the statement released by Oxford - many within the organization as well.

Manning's brief tenure as coach had a drastic impact. He elevated the team from a struggling squad at risk of losing their status to a strong competitor for promotion.

It is true that Manchester United's statement about having more options for a new coach if they finish in the top two as opposed to the bottom six is accurate.

Even though the requirements and goals are not the same now, it's best if they continue following the successful methods that resulted in Manning being chosen. I suggest this despite knowing that it was only a short, passionate connection during the summer and not a lasting commitment.
