England interim manager Lee Carsley announces first squad - with Angel Gomes included
Acting England manager Lee Carsley has announced his first team for the upcoming matches against Ireland and Finland.
The England national team will travel to the Aviva Stadium in Dublin on September 7th, and then play at Wembley Stadium against Finland in the Nations League three days later.
Carsley is announcing his first team since temporarily taking over from former manager Gareth Southgate. Southgate led England to two finals but stepped down after the team lost to Spain in the Euros.
Four new players have been called up for the first time. They are Tino Livramento from Newcastle United, Angel Gomes from Lille, Noni Madueke from Chelsea, and Morgan Gibbs-White from Nottingham Forest.
In other news, Jack Grealish from Manchester City and Harry Maguire from Manchester United have been brought back into the team after being left out of Gareth Southgate's roster for Euro 2024.
Carsley stated after the squad announcement that the situation he is stepping into is quite different from when Gareth and Steve selected the squad.
I recognize that I am very fortunate and I am looking forward to meeting the players.
However, when discussing the newcomers, he further commented: "I believed it was necessary to include some new faces and make changes to the team."
Carsley stated that he had not considered his future in the England job, even though he was appointed on an interim basis for the entire autumn season.
"That doesn't really matter to me," said the 50-year-old.
