A man charged with the murder of Georgia nursing student Laken Riley has been convicted of the crime. This case has sparked a national conversation about immigration amidst the ongoing presidential campaign this year.
Jose Ibarra, a 26-year-old from Venezuela who crossed into the U.S. unlawfully in 2022, has been accused of murder and additional offenses related to the death of Riley on February 22. Riley was discovered deceased on the jogging paths of the campus in Athens during a morning run.
After his conviction, Ibarra received a life sentence with no chance of parole.
On Wednesday, Judge H. Patrick Haggard of the Athens-Clarke County Superior Court made the ruling after Ibarra chose to give up his right to a jury trial.
Ibarra's trial wrapped up on Wednesday morning after three days of hearings. The prosecution called 29 witnesses to the stand, which included police officers, Riley's roommates, and a woman who shared an apartment with Ibarra.
During her opening statement, Prosecutor Sheila Ross mentioned that on the day of the murder, Ibarra had been looking for women. When he encountered Riley, she resisted. As she fought against becoming a victim of assault, he violently struck her head multiple times with a rock.
Defense lawyer Dustin Kirby described Riley's death as a heartbreaking event and referred to the evidence in the case as shocking and unsettling. However, he contended that there isn't enough proof to demonstrate that Ibarra was responsible. He also raised questions about how Ibarra's fingerprints ended up on the phone if he was allegedly wearing gloves at the time.
Kirby stated, "The proof in this situation strongly suggests that Laken Riley was murdered. However, the indications pointing to Jose Ibarra as the one responsible for her death are only circumstantial."
On Tuesday, the defense brought in a police officer, a jogger, and a neighbor of Ibarra's to testify, and they concluded their case by Wednesday morning.
Each day, Riley's parents, relatives, and friends filled the courtroom, often becoming emotional as they heard the accounts from witnesses.
Ibarra, wearing a collared shirt and dark trousers every day with his feet in chains, seemed alert and engaged during the entire trial.
During the trial, Riley's family and friends shared heartfelt accounts, describing the devastating impact her absence has had on their lives.
"I don't run daily anymore," shared Connolly Huth, Riley's roommate. "It's hard to think about running when I'm always glancing over my shoulder in public, worried that I might be next. I feel intense guilt every single day for not being there with Laken on that run. It was her, not me, and I sincerely hope and pray that nothing like this ever happens to anyone again."
Riley's mother, Allyson Phillips, shared her devastating experience, stating that Ibarra "destroyed every precious moment we could have shared with [Riley] in the future."
"Laken's death wasn't the only tragedy on that day when Jose Ibarra attacked her. Her family and friends also suffered profound losses. We will all be changed forever," she shared. "This monster robbed us of the joy of watching Laken finish nursing school. He denied us the opportunity to welcome our future son-in-law. He shattered our hopes of meeting our grandchildren. And above all, he took away my closest friend."
President-elect Donald Trump, who frequently referenced Riley's death to promote his anti-immigrant agenda during his campaign, also shared his thoughts on the ruling.
“Justice has been served for Laken Riley! The individual responsible for the tragic death of our cherished Laken Riley has just been found GUILTY on all charges related to his terrible actions,” Trump posted on Truth Social. “While the sorrow and anguish will remain, we hope this verdict brings some comfort and resolution to her loving family, who tirelessly sought justice, and helps prevent other families from experiencing similar pain.”
