Kyle Walker shared that many of the Tottenham players were emotional and shed tears when Andre Villas-Boas was fired by chairman Daniel Levy.
In an episode of his podcast, You Can't Outdo Kyle Walker, Walker shared how deeply he felt when Villas-Boas, who was well-liked by the team, announced that he had to depart against his will.
"tears are streaming down my face... Michael Dawson is getting emotional," Walker shared. "That's how important he was to the team."
Villas-Boas had a successful debut season at White Hart Lane in 2012/13, leading Spurs close to the Champions League with a team that had a rising star in Gareth Bale. Unfortunately, the team narrowly missed out on qualifying for the top European competition by just one point, and Bale was transferred to Real Madrid for a record-breaking fee of £85.3 million.
AVB faced criticism as the hefty fee spent on transfers did not yield positive results. Tottenham brought in new players like Christian Eriksen, Paulinho, Roberto Soldado, Nacer Chadli, Etienne Capoue, Erik Lamela, and Vlad Chiriches to replace an iconic player. Eriksen was the standout performer among them, but the rest of the signings failed to impress. Eventually, AVB was sacked due to the team's poor performance.
Walker expressed his disappointment over Bale's departure, stating that it was a significant loss for the team. The club brought in seven new players with the money from Bale's transfer, but unfortunately, the team did not have enough time to gel together under Villas-Boas before things started to go downhill.
Walker acknowledges that the team did not represent him well, however, he praises Villas-Boas for leaving a strong impact. He mentioned that the fact that 10 or 12 players were in tears over the manager's departure shows that Villas-Boas was able to create a positive atmosphere in the locker room.
Villas-Boas became the manager of Zenit Saint Petersburg after leaving the Premier League. He then went on to coach Shanghai SIPG and most recently Marseille in Ligue 1. The 46-year-old is currently serving as the president of Porto, the team where he won the Europa League before joining Chelsea in 2011.
Walker signed with Manchester City in 2017 and quickly became known as one of the top right-backs in the world. He is famous for his speed and ability to defend effectively in one-on-one situations. During his time at City, he has experienced great success, winning multiple championships with the club.
