Mitt Romney says his dog scandal doesn’t compare to Kristi Noem’s: ‘I didn’t shoot my dog’
The Republican senator from Utah, Mitt Romney, pointed out that although he had previously been criticized for tying his dog to the roof of his car during a long journey, he at least didn't shoot the animal. Romney's comment comes amidst intense criticism of South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem, who recently recounted how she killed a 14-month-old hunting dog. The incident has ignited widespread outrage in US political circles.
Romney stated on Tuesday at Capitol Hill, according to HuffPost, that he did not partake in consuming his dog nor did he take the life of his dog. He made it clear that he had affection for his dog and his dog reciprocated that love.
The story of Noem ending the life of Cricket, a dog, along with a goat whose name is not disclosed, is going to be a part of her upcoming book with the title No Going Back. It is quite ironic.
Last week, The Guardian got hold of the book and told the tale of a dog and a goat. This caused a lot of controversy in politics and made it uncertain whether Noem would be chosen as Donald Trump's Republican running mate for the election, even though she supports him very much.
Noem expressed strong dislike towards Cricket, a female wirehair pointer, in her blog post where she detailed how the dog caused chaos during a pheasant hunting trip and also committed the act of killing chickens owned by a neighboring individual.
According to a statement by Noem, she brought Cricket to a gravel pit and fatally shot her. Later, she proceeded to kill a goat using two rounds of shotgun. To get more shells, she walked back to her vehicle. The governor clarified that the reason for this action was that the goat had a strong odor and had not undergone castration, leading to aggressive behavior.
In 2012, Romney was chosen as the Republican candidate for President. However, throughout his campaign, there was a lot of talk about a situation where he put his family dog, Seamus the Irish setter, on top of his car for a 12-hour journey, which scared the poor creature. This caused a lot of controversy.
This week, he made a comment about never having consumed dog meat. This was aimed at Barack Obama, the Democrat who won against him in the 2012 election. In one of his books, Obama wrote about trying dog meat in Indonesia during his youth.
At present, Romney stands as the sole resistant Republican voice against Trump in Congress. As he approaches retirement towards the year-end, he has transformed into a reliable authority on speaking truthfully about politics.
Romney expressed on Tuesday to HuffPost that Noem's confession could create a challenge for President Trump in selecting a suitable vice-president candidate.
He said: "He will need to search for an individual who is more intelligent than him, superior in communication, and shares similar views without being hindered by ethical values."
Noem has stood by her tale of killing Cricket and the goat, claiming it was a difficult but necessary action in farm life and even expressing the readiness to tackle similar political challenges. Nonetheless, her assertion about having to shoot the puppy has been contradicted by specialists in animal care and hunting.
According to a review by The Guardian about the law in South Dakota, it's possible that Noem broke some rules by letting Cricket kill some chickens when she got away from the truck. This supposedly happened after a hunt where Cricket was too rowdy. Moreover, Noem's act of killing the animal in her own land might have gone against the laws that apply in the area.
A representative of the governor refrained from making a statement. Furthermore, she faced disapproval for revealing that her family had put down three of their horses, as stated in one of her responses.
During the month of March, she talked about the tragic deaths of three horses known as Lucy, Dunny, and Tibbs during an interview with the Newsmax media outlet, which supports conservative political views. She also showed pictures of the horses standing in newly dug holes as well.
Noem expressed that the older horses were not just ordinary horses. They were considered important members of her family who were significant in raising her daughters.
