Kris Kristofferson, the acclaimed country musician and actor known for his collaborations with Johnny Cash and Martin Scorsese, has passed away at the age of 88.

A spokesperson noted that he died "calmly" at his home in Hawaii on Saturday, with family by his side.

The statement portrayed Kristofferson as "a lover of peace, a revolutionary figure, an actor, a big star, an icon of attractiveness, and a dedicated family man."

The highly decorated artist gained recognition for his songwriting skills, particularly for hits like "Me and Bobby McGee" and "Help Me Make It Through the Night." In addition to his writing achievements, he also had a role in the popular film "A Star Is Born."

A statement from his family expressed that they felt truly fortunate for the moments they shared with him.

"Thank you for showing him your love throughout the years. When you spot a rainbow, remember that he’s smiling down on us," the message said, as reported by CBS News, the BBC's partner in the US.

Kristofferson was born on June 22, 1936, in Brownsville, Texas, and went on to become a prominent figure in the world of country music.

"When I began my journey, I was among those who aimed to elevate the image of country music," he stated in a message from his family.

"Several of the songs I've released became hits for that reason. I can see how that might lead someone to nominate me for a Hall of Fame. I'm well aware it's not due to my singing voice."

The director of the Country Hall of Fame and Museum mentioned that he has created “a lasting impact.”

"Kris Kristofferson thought that creativity is a divine gift, and that those who overlook it are destined for unhappiness," Kyle Young posted on X. "He advocated that a thoughtful life allows one's true feelings to be expressed, and through his art, he shared not only his own emotions but also resonated with ours."

He received three Grammy Awards for Best Country Song for "Help Me Make It Through the Night" in 1972, along with two duet awards with Rita Coolidge in 1974 and 1976. They were also married during the 1970s.

In 2003, Kristofferson was honored with the Free Speech Award by the Americana Music Association.

One year later, he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.

He has been awarded numerous lifetime achievement accolades, including those from The Recording Academy, the Country Music Association, and the Academy of Country Music.

Kristofferson is mourned by his spouse Lisa, along with his eight kids and seven grandkids.
