Operators provide warnings over Kos wildfires and thunderstorm disruption | Travel Weekly

Kos

Jet2 and easyJet vacations have sent out a warning to travelers following the outbreak of wildfires on the Greek island of Kos.

Firefighters were said to be dealing with fires on both Kos and Chios on Monday.

Visitors in Kos were forced to leave their hotels as over 100 firefighters battled a raging wildfire, aided by water-bombing planes and two helicopters sent from Athens.

Additional: Alerts about high temperatures provided as fires break out in Cyprus and Greece.

Tourists who were forced to leave Rhodes due to last summer's wildfires will be given complimentary accommodations.

Cancelled flights as Hurricane Beryl, which is expected to be very destructive, approaches the Caribbean.

In the past day, there were 52 wildfires reported in Greece. Of these, 44 were quickly addressed by firefighters, according to Vasilia Vathrakoyiannis, a spokesperson for the fire department.

Officials were still working to control a total of eight fires by Monday evening.

Jet2 mentioned that they know about the current problem with fires in the Kardamena region of Kos.

At our company, we always put the safety and happiness of our customers and employees first. We urge everyone on the island to listen to the advice of the local authorities to stay safe.

At the moment, our Jet2.com flights are on track for today and the airport is open for business.

Nevertheless, because of the circumstances, the airport could be crowded and you might encounter delays that are longer than usual.

EasyJet holidays stated that they are keeping a close eye on the rapidly changing situation with wildfires in the Kardamena region of Kos, and collaborating with their local teams in the area.

"We wanted to let our customers who are currently staying in Kardamena know to keep listening to the instructions from their hotel and the local government. Make sure to check your text messages and emails for any new information from us," stated the operator.

For guests who have been asked to leave their hotel, our easyJet holidays team has stationed members at all designated meeting points to offer additional assistance and advice. We kindly request that customers identify themselves to these representatives for further support.

"For those planning to visit Kos soon, most of the island is not experiencing any issues, so your vacation should proceed as scheduled with our regular booking rules in place."

We have reached out to customers who have plans to travel to the affected region of Kardamena in advance, regarding their vacation.

We request that customers keep an eye on their emails, as we will contact them if their vacation is affected by the changing circumstances.

Jet2 also alerted passengers to potential delays in air traffic control slots in the eastern Mediterranean and Balearic islands until Wednesday, as thunderstorms in various parts of eastern Europe continue to cause disruptions.

The company advised on their website: "If you are currently on vacation and facing severe weather, make sure to leave early for the airport and consider the possibility of poor road conditions on the way there."

Our team in the UK is working diligently to reduce any issues with our flight schedule, but there may be some disruptions for travelers going to or from affected areas.

All Jet2.com flights are currently running smoothly. We aim to start boarding flights as scheduled to ensure a timely departure once we receive clearance from air traffic control.

We're sorry if this causes a longer delay on the plane before you take off.
