The British Empire's Honours System The Honours System of the British Empire involves recognition and awarding of success, achievement or service in a wide variety of roles and fields. The most common type of honour is the Order of the British Empire, which has five different classes, including Knight/Dame Grand Cross, Knight/Dame Commander, Commander, Officer, and Member. The honours are awarded based on recommendations from government officials and committees, as well as public nominations. Although the honours system was originally created to recognise military achievements, it is now expanded to include individuals from various backgrounds such as arts, sciences, academia, and community service. The titles given to individuals receiving honours vary according to their level of achievement and contribution to society. For instance, those appointed as Knights and Dames are referred to as ‘Sir’ or ‘Dame’, with the title being passed down to their spouses. In summary, the Honours System recognises the contribution of outstanding individuals towards their respective fields and society at large, irrespective of their social standing or background.
