Melania Trump Says King Charles Is Her Pen Pal
In June 2019, President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump made a state visit to England that sparked street demonstrations and news stories about keeping Queen Elizabeth II waiting for tea. While much of the attention was on Prince Harry and his attempts to steer clear of the man who referred to his wife as "nasty," there were moments of connection between the royal family and the glamorous first couple of the United States. In her recently published memoir, Melania reveals that she and her husband even had King Charles III and Queen Camilla over for an intimate dinner.
“Donald and I held a small dinner at the US ambassador’s residence to celebrate Prince Charles and the Duchess—an ideal representation of the strong bond between our countries,” she writes. “Even with the chaotic situation in British politics involving Brexit and shifts in the Prime Minister’s office, the Queen and her family welcomed us graciously, showing us incredible hospitality.”
Melania mentions that she and Trump have stayed in contact with the king through letters. “When we said goodbye to Her Majesty, we invited her to come back to the United States,” she shares. “She smiled warmly in response, expressing her thanks. Unfortunately, Her Majesty couldn’t visit us again before she passed away in 2022, but our bond with the Royal Family remains strong, and we still correspond with King Charles.”
You may be curious about what Charles and Melania discussed during their meetings, but it likely won’t shock anyone familiar with the king’s dedication to raising awareness about climate change. Melania shares, “We first met many years ago in New York City. This time, we had an engaging conversation about his strong commitment to protecting the environment.”
When questioned about whether the king had been in touch with Trump and Melania, Buckingham Palace chose not to respond. Melania and her spouse visited the UK again in December 2019, and during that visit, they kept Charles and Camilla waiting for tea. From Melania's perspective, at least, the relationship seemed friendly.
