Kemi Badenoch: Who is she?

Kemi Badenoch is a British Conservative MP for Saffron Walden. She was born in London and spent most of her childhood in Nigeria before returning to the UK as a teenager. Prior to her career in politics, Badenoch, who is of Nigerian descent, worked as a software and IT project manager.

Badenoch was first elected to parliament in 2017 and was subsequently appointed as a Junior Minister in the Department for Education. She has been vocal about her commitment to improving educational opportunities for all children, regardless of their background. She has also spoken about the need for greater diversity in politics.

Kemi Badenoch's Controversies

Despite her relatively short career in parliament, Badenoch has attracted controversy on a number of occasions. In 2018, she was accused of making derogatory remarks about LGBTQ+ people during a speech. The comments prompted criticism from activists and opposition MPs.

In 2021, Badenoch found herself at the center of a row over the government's approach to race equality. In a speech in the House of Commons, she accused the opposition of promoting "critical race theory" - a controversial academic discipline that argues racism is systemic and embedded in society. The remarks were met with anger from some campaigners who accused her of being out of touch with the experiences of black and ethnic minority people in the UK.
