Taylor edges past Cameron in epic to avenge only loss

Katie Taylor

Katie Taylor has now won 23 out of 24 fights, becoming an even more impressive boxer. Meanwhile, Chantelle Cameron experienced her first loss in the ring.

In a truly exciting match for the light-welterweight title in Dublin, Katie Taylor managed to narrowly defeat Briton Chantelle Cameron through a majority decision.

Taylor from Ireland had an outstanding fight on Saturday at 3Arena where she became a two-weight undisputed champion while also getting revenge on the only loss she has experienced during her career.

In the last few seconds, Taylor came close to falling, but she managed to remain standing which was significant for the final scorecards.

A single judge deemed the result even, whereas the remaining pair recorded scores of 98-92 and 96-94 in favour of Taylor.

"Those who underestimated me clearly don't have a good understanding of who I am," she stated. "I propose that we make a trip to Croke Park and watch the whole trilogy."

Taylor is now considered an underdog for the first time in her career, but she has successfully risen to the challenge. She has achieved a remarkable feat by becoming only the third fighter, alongside Claressa Shields and Terence Crawford, to win undisputed championships in two different weight categories during the four-belt era.

Cameron experienced her initial setback in her professional career with a loss, resulting in her giving up her titles for IBF, WBA, WBO and WBC in the light-welterweight category.

Taylor referred to the match as her "true homecoming" and made the audience even more excited when she suggested having a final match at Croke Park, a sports stadium in Dublin that holds up to 80,000 spectators and is mainly used for Gaelic games.

During the week of the fight, the 37-year-old fighter withdrew due to a past disappointment from six months ago. However, she managed to have an outstanding performance, which will undoubtedly be regarded as her most significant win.

Taylor & Cameron's Instant Classic!

Similar to their initial bout in May, the 3Arena was nearly packed more than two hours prior to the headlining match.

Victories were achieved by Irish men Thomas Carty, Paddy Donovan and Gary Cully, leading up to the notable moment of Taylor's entrance into the boxing ring.

At the beginning of the year, Taylor took a long time to enter the home soil as a professional and enjoyed the experience.

On her 18th consecutive world title fight, she tried something new and walked to the ring before the usual pre-fight song 'Sweet Caroline' finished playing. This was a different experience for her.

Taylor wasted no time this time as she immediately made her way down the ramp and entered the ring.

Taylor stood in the corner where Cameron had confronted them earlier. The champion warmed up with some shadow boxing on the ramp before entering the ring to a hostile reception.

As Taylor remained stoic, the biased audience displayed their loyalty by welcoming the fighter from Bray with enthusiasm, while continuously hissing and jeering at Cameron.

Taylor came out strong in the initial round, adopting a different approach from their previous encounter by charging ahead boldly. Despite the resounding cheers of Taylor's supporters from Ireland each time she landed a punch, Cameron stood firm and didn't budge.

The fighter who represented the home team unexpectedly fell to the floor, but was identified as slipping rather than being knocked down. In the last couple of seconds, Taylor aggressively hit Cameron with strong impact.

Despite being under pressure, the British athlete didn't retreat and attempted to retaliate. However, Taylor successfully dodged the attack, causing the audience to cheer with joy.

In the midst of the tumultuous exchanges, Taylor devised a strategy wherein she would hold back and anticipate Cameron's approach before unleashing a barrage of counterattacks.

Cameron's forehead got a cut during the third round when she clashed heads with the other woman while exchanging hooks on the ropes.

Taylor was dominating the fight, and her trainer Ross Enamait pushed her to keep going in the last few moments of the fourth round as the gash on Cameron's forehead grew larger.

The gash was examined by the doctor but was promptly disregarded. Although Cameron was bleeding, he refused to retreat and started the fifth round with vigor.

Taylor attempted to push away, however, the title holder persisted and struck Taylor with a beautiful right hand while she was in motion.

The fighter from Northampton attempted to replicate her control in the sixth round. However, Taylor altered her strategy and enticed Cameron into close-range brawls.

Cameron seemed to fall with impact at times and raised concerns to the referee when Taylor would hold him in a wrestling manner as they reached the middle of the game.

The seventh round saw the reunion of the two women who stood their ground, refusing to slow down as the unbelievable action continued.

The spectators loudly cheered as Taylor made her way back to her corner after the seventh round, but they expressed their disapproval when the referee cautioned the Irish female boxer about grappling a few moments afterward.

In the eighth round, Cameron accidentally bumped his shoulder into Taylor's and swiftly followed up with a stunning uppercut.

Taylor was hit by the shot which caused her to stagger backwards, but luckily the bell rang just in time.

During the ninth round, Taylor heard the sound of her name, "Katie," as she tried to make her way through a difficult situation created by Cameron's strong and unrelenting attacks.

The British person seemed to be struggling to keep up, while Taylor began to lose energy.

Taylor's cheek swelled after being hit multiple times, but she managed to remain standing despite the attack.

In the last portion of the fight, the two women acknowledged each other with a touch of their gloves before continuing the match.

Taylor was in danger of being knocked down and was close to falling to the ground in the last few seconds following powerful punches from Cameron, as she didn't have enough resources to remain standing.

Cameron managed to land a hard hit on Taylor during the round, which could have possibly won her at least one of the scorecards. However, Taylor was able to withstand the hit and this caused her corner and the spectators to erupt in excitement.

Throughout the entire week leading up to the fight, there was a tense atmosphere that culminated in a moment of heightened anticipation as the final scores were announced.

The initial scorecard resulted in a tie of 95-95, which increased the level of suspense.

However, the last two scorecards favored Taylor, causing excitement in the audience, and the Irish athlete finally permitted herself to join in the roaring as she celebrated her biggest triumph.
