Rothesay International Eastbourne 2024: Daria Kasatkina sets up final battle against Leylah Fernandez at Devonshire Park

Kasatkina

The two players who will compete in the women's finals of the 2024 Rothesay International Eastbourne tournament have been determined. Daria Kasatkina, ranked No.14 in the world, and Leylah Fernandez will battle it out on the grass court for the championship title.

In this year's women's final in Eastbourne, we will see a new winner being crowned. Kasatkina, who was the runner-up last year, will aim to win the title this time against the in-form Fernandez. Both players have never won a grass court title before, so there is a lot on the line for them in the final match.

Fernandez, who is competing in the Eastbourne tournament for the first time this year, has been strong and successful all week. She has beaten top players such as Barbora Krejcikova, Alison Krueger, Harriet Dart, and defending champion Madison Keys to reach the championship match.

The young player has really started playing well on grass courts recently. She made it to the quarter-finals in the Rothesay Classic Birmingham last week and now she is determined to win the final tomorrow.

In the blog post, Fernandez talked about how challenging her semi-final match against Keys was. She mentioned the importance of mental strength and expressed gratitude for her supportive team. The crowd also played a significant role in boosting her confidence during the match.

"I'm really enjoying playing on the grass courts right now, it's really important to me. We're just taking it step by step, enjoying ourselves on and off the court. It's great practice for Wimbledon, but for now, we're focusing on the upcoming final tomorrow."

The Canadian player made a big impact on the WTA tour during the 2021 US Open, where she had an incredible journey to the final but narrowly missed out on the trophy to Britain's Emma Raducanu. Fast forward three years and she has won three tour-level titles and reached a career-best ranking of world No.13 in 2022.

Her strong mindset and refusal to quit have made her a resilient competitor in the past few weeks, as seen in her 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 victory over Keys earlier today. With a burning desire to claim her first title on the grass, Fernandez is poised to present a formidable challenge for her upcoming opponent in the final.

Yet, Kasatkina is familiar with the experience of competing in a final at Devonshire Park, as she narrowly missed out on the trophy last year. Despite being behind a set, the 27-year-old managed to rally back in her semifinal match against Jasmine Poalini, winning 3-6, 7-5, 6-3. She is determined to win it all this year.

"It's always challenging to participate in a tournament where you need to defend a significant number of points, so I'm thrilled that I performed well, had fun on the court, and managed to stage a comeback in the match," stated Kasatkina.

Leylah performs excellently on grass. It will be challenging as she is in top form and has defeated strong opponents this week. In the finals, all competitors aim to win. I will try my best to have fun and we will see the outcome of this final match.

The match tomorrow will be the fifth time these two players have faced off. The Russian player has won both of their previous encounters, once on a hard court and once on a clay court. Kasatkina has lost her last five final matches and is determined to break this streak. She hopes to turn her luck around and win at Devonshire Park on her second attempt.

You are able to watch the women's final only on BBC Sport and BBC's digital channels.
