The BBC was informed by local authorities that vocalist Justin Timberlake was apprehended in New York for operating a vehicle while under the influence.

According to a statement by the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office, the famous singer was apprehended and charged on Tuesday morning.

Timberlake visited Sag Harbor, which is a wealthy town located in the Hamptons. This place is a famous summer getaway spot for famous individuals in Long Island.

According to the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office, he was set free without the need to pay bail even though he has been officially accused.

The BBC has reached out to Timberlake's attorney to ask for their statement.

At 12:37 EDT (05:37 BST), Timberlake was taken into custody by police officers. They stopped him in his grey BMW because he drove through a stop sign and didn't keep to the correct side of the road. This information comes from an official charge sheet.

According to the document, Timberlake's eyes were red and shiny while he was being questioned by officers, and his breath had a strong smell of alcohol.

Officials reported that his talk was lethargic and he did not do well on the sobriety evaluations given by the officers.

The documents state that he declined to take a test that measures the alcohol level in his breath.

Timberlake supposedly informed the officer who pulled him over that he drank only one martini before he trailed his friends to their destination, as stated by CBS News, the US affiliate of BBC.

He has a virtual appointment set in Sag Harbor court on the 26th of July.

At the age of 43, Timberlake had plans to start a worldwide tour to promote his sixth album, called Everything I Thought It Was.

Timberlake, who used to be a part of the well-known boy band NSYNC, now pursues a career in acting and songwriting, and has achieved great success as a musician with high sales worldwide.

The famous singer has previously been transparent about getting support for their issue with drinking too much alcohol.
