A tune by famous pop diva Britney Spears has made a surprising comeback on the music charts around 15 years after its initial release. This unexpected achievement is attributed to a fan's witticism about her former beau Justin Timberlake's latest track.

At the age of 42, Timberlake is getting ready to put out his new album which is the first one he's made in the studio since his 2018 release, "Man of the Woods." The album has been named "Everything I Thought It Was" and the lead single, "Selfish", was revealed to the public on Thursday 25 January together with the announcement.

The admirers of Spears speedily got into a conversation about her track named "Selfish", which was included in the deluxe variation of her album Femme Fatale launched in 2011.

Currently, "Selfish" has climbed up to the top ranks on the US iTunes charts. This happened when a fan account of Spears on X/Twitter made a humorous comment about her being the one to release the aforementioned song this week.

As of now, the song is ranked among the top 10 on iTunes, having made it to the top 40 on Thursday evening.

According to BritneyxYtube, the person in charge of the X account, the whole thing began as a humorous prank after Timberlake introduced his new tune. "After that, we all hopped on board and pretended that Britney Spears was making a 'brand-new' track," BritneyxYtube informed Entertainment Weekly.

"I am still in shock with how much it has grown, and the outcomes we witness presently."

They expressed their joy by saying, "We are thrilled to witness her song's resurgence after all these years!"

Back in 2002, Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears were seen together when they were in a romantic relationship.

Timberlake received renewed attention following Spears' release from her conservatorship and the publication of her memoir, where she divulged information about their three-year romance that concluded in 2002.

In her book, The Woman in Me, Spears claimed that the press depicted her as a promiscuous woman who had shattered the heart of a popular American man. Actually, while Timberlake was having a good time in Hollywood, Spears was in a coma in Louisiana.

In the year they broke up, Timberlake put out a track called "Cry Me a River". This song's accompanying music video featured a blonde lady and stirred up gossip that Spears had cheated on Timberlake when they were together.

Spears confirmed the rumours in her memoir by admitting to kissing her choreographer, Wade Robson. However, she also disclosed that Timberlake was unfaithful to her prior to this incident.

In 2021, Timberlake offered his apologies to Spears after the airing of the documentary, Framing Britney Spears, by the New York Times.

I express my sincere apologies for the instances in my life wherein my conduct added to the issue, where I talked without context, or stayed silent instead of defending what is ethical," reads a part of his statement on Instagram last Friday. "I recognize that I failed to meet the standards during these instances, as well as in a lot of other occurrences and received privileges from a structure that allows sexism and discrimination.”

Spears has recently denied speculation about her return to the music scene, stating that she has no plans to come back and is firm in her decision.
