Leigh Wood stops Josh Warrington in seventh round to retain world title

Josh Warrington

Leigh Wood held onto his championship as the world's featherweight champion by enduring an intense attack from Josh Warrington in a thrilling showdown at the Utilita Arena Sheffield. In the end, he succeeded in stopping his fellow Brit to emerge victorious.

During his second reign as the WBA champion, Wood defended his title for the first time. He withstood many powerful punches from Warrington during multiple rounds and managed to stay on his feet despite enduring Warrington's constant attacks.

Wood remained calm despite all the loud sounds around him and delivered well-coordinated punches, concluding with a hit to the temple with his right hand and following through with a left when Warrington was falling down.

Warrington had set out to claim his third championship at 126lb weight division, and he bravely tried to keep going. However, he seemed to be struggling to stay on his feet, which caused the referee, Michael Alexander, to intervene and declare the contest over as soon as the seventh round came to an end.

Warrington expressed his dissatisfaction with the decision and then lowered his head in defeat, resting it on the referee's shoulder. Meanwhile, Wood celebrated his recent victory, extending his impressive record to 28 wins and only three losses.

Wood may soon be heading into a brawl at the City Ground, the cherished abode of Nottingham Forest. The fighter has confessed that cutting down to 126lb is growing more and more difficult, and so he might be stepping up to super-featherweight.

Although he is three years younger than the fighter who defeated him, it is more unclear what lies ahead for Warrington as he has just suffered his third defeat in 35 fights. These losses include two consecutive losses in world title fights within a year.
