Columbus Blue Jackets winger Johnny Gaudreau and his younger brother, Matthew, tragically lost their lives on Thursday night when they were struck by a driver who is believed to have been under the influence of alcohol while they were biking in New Jersey.

The NHL community is incredibly surprised and saddened by the tragic death of Columbus Blue Jackets player Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew. Johnny, known as 'Johnny Hockey' for his passion and talent on the ice, was not only a phenomenal hockey player but also a caring father and cherished member of his family and team. He had a positive impact on everyone he met.

Driver In Custody For Killing Johnny Gaudreau And Matthew

The New Jersey State Police stated that Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau were riding their bikes on County Route 551 in Salem County at around 8:30 p.m. ET on Thursday when they were hit by a Jeep Grand Cherokee. Unfortunately, both brothers passed away from their injuries. The driver, Sean Higgins, who is 43 years old, was taken into custody at the scene on suspicion of driving under the influence and is now facing two charges of causing death while operating a vehicle. He is currently being held in jail.

The brothers were in New Jersey to attend their sister's wedding happening on Friday.

Johnny Gaudreau, known as "Johnny Hockey," spent nine seasons with the Calgary Flames before joining the Columbus team. He was recognized as the top player in the NCAA by winning the 2014 Hobey Baker Award. In his first full season in the NHL, he was named to the All-Rookie team and participated in the 2015 All-Star Game. Johnny was also a finalist for the Calder Trophy for best rookie and received the Lady Byng Trophy for his sportsmanship during the 2016-17 season. In 2022, Gaudreau signed with the Columbus Blue Jackets and played with them for two seasons. Additionally, Matthew Gaudreau played professional hockey in the ECHL, most recently for the Worcester Railers during the 2021-22 season.
