Broadcaster John Stapleton reveals Parkinson’s diagnosis

The broadcaster John Stapleton has announced that he has been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease.

The 78-year-old journalist, known for his contributions to shows like Newsnight, Panorama, and GMTV’s News Hour, revealed his diagnosis during a video conversation with his son, Nick, on BBC One’s Morning Live.

He mentioned, “For nearly 50 years, I’ve made my living by speaking.”

It can be quite annoying at times, especially when others keep asking, "I'm sorry, could you repeat that?" and you find yourself having to say the same thing over and over.

"I'm quite realistic about the possibility that things could deteriorate. I make an effort to stay optimistic, because really, what's the use of being negative?"

Nick, a journalist and broadcaster, mentioned that his father's diagnosis has been quite difficult to deal with, but it wasn't unexpected since his grandmother had also suffered from the same degenerative illness.

Parkinson’s disease is a disorder that causes gradual deterioration of certain areas of the brain over time. Symptoms can include shaking and decreased movement, as noted on the NHS website.

Reflecting on his mother, Stapleton remarked, “I saw her transformation from a vibrant, energetic, and sociable woman to someone who is now quite delicate.”

"One of the challenges she encountered at first was her struggle with everyday tasks, such as opening a can of beans or peeling a potato. Strangely enough, I’m also dealing with similar issues at the moment."

In the video, Nick had a conversation with his dad about what lies ahead and how he could be of the most help to him.

Stapleton shared his desire to maintain his independence for as long as he can. “When it comes to my home, I certainly wouldn't want to leave it, which I’m sure you can understand,” he commented.

He mentioned to his son that he would be fine with using a stairlift if it became needed. While he was hesitant about moving into a care facility, he also recognized the reality of the situation.

In a message shared on X, the organization Parkinson's UK expressed their gratitude to @JohnStapletonTV for his revelation about his Parkinson's diagnosis during his appearance on @BBCMorningLive.

"We would like to extend our encouragement to John and his son, @staplenick, as they embark on John's special path dealing with this condition."
