Joe Biden news conference fails to silence critics
The press event of Joe Biden, where he claimed he was still capable to be the US president, did not quiet down the dissenting voices within his political party.
Three Democratic lawmakers added their voices to the increasing number of people urging Mr. Biden to withdraw from the race for President of the United States.
Demands for the 81-year-old to resign have increased since he struggled during a television debate with Republican Donald Trump last month.
During a press conference that lasted an hour on Thursday night, he appeared more composed and articulate when answering journalists' questions, but he still made some mistakes.
He accidentally called his deputy, Kamala Harris, "Vice President Trump" instead of her correct title during the first question.
During a recent Nato event, he mistakenly referred to Ukraine's leader as "President Putin" before quickly realizing his error and correcting himself. This occurred two hours prior to the event.
This shows that Mr. Biden's campaign is still at risk, and there is a chance that more supporters may leave in the coming days.
Some supporters, such as famous actor George Clooney, have withdrawn their financial backing, claiming he is not capable of serving another four-year term.
A Democratic supporter who believes Mr. Biden should resign shared with the BBC that others who feel the same way thought the president did fine during the news conference, but not well enough to convince them otherwise.
One challenge that Mr. Biden will face in the future is that he will be closely observed and analyzed at all times during any event.
Any error or blunder will be used as proof that he is not suitable or competent to seek reelection.
Not long after giving his press conference, Connecticut representative Jim Himes took to X to commend Mr. Biden's history in serving the public, yet urged him to withdraw from the campaign.
The most capable contender to tackle the challenge presented by Trump, he stated, was now not Joe Biden.
Illinois representative Eric Sorensen shared on social media that President Biden ran in 2020 prioritizing the country over party. He is now urging him to continue prioritizing the country over party once again.
California representative Scott Peters was the third person to speak up, expressing concern about the high stakes and the need to get back on track.
Now, 19 Democratic politicians are asking Mr. Biden to stop running for president.
In the press conference, Biden reassured journalists that he is committed to finishing what he started in the race.
"If I start to work at a slower pace and struggle to complete the task, that's a clear sign that I may not be the right person for the job," he stated. "However, I have yet to see any evidence of that happening."
After the press conference, a number of his followers in Congress quickly spoke up to express their agreement with his claim that he is the top contender.
"We need to put an end to the petty criticisms and concentrate on the tasks that lie ahead. This individual has shown that he can do it, he has successfully done so in the past," stated Jaime Harrison, the chairman of the Democratic National Committee.
American friends also supported Mr. Biden, with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer saying he was impressive when they met in person at the summit.
French president Emmanuel Macron said that the mistakes were just a small error in speaking, and he mentioned that Mr Biden was well-informed about the issues.
However, Trump wasted no time in making fun of Mr. Biden for his error regarding Kamala Harris. He sarcastically commented, "Well done, Joe!" on the Truth Social platform.
