Joan Collins, 90, shares the secret to her ‘wonderful’ marriage to fifth husband Percy Gibson, 58
Joan fondly remembers the small actions that Percy does, such as serving her a fresh cup of coffee in bed each morning and leaving affectionate messages beneath the kettle.
In her recent book, Behind The Shoulder Pads, Joan stated that Percy was her greatest lover without shame. However, she made sure to highlight that their relationship started off as just friends.
"We developed a strong bond as good friends with Percy before anything else. This connection between us became our foundation and we truly understood each other," she emphasized the significance of having a close friendship and having separate bathrooms to ensure a happy marriage.
Achieving a perfect harmony between self-reliance and unity, the couple carries out their work from different workstations. Percy governs their magnificent real estate holdings in London, St. Tropez, and Los Angeles.
According to Joan, who turned 90 in May, the secret to her youthful appearance is to refrain from discussing her age.
Joan openly talks about the negative aspects of the movie business, including her own experiences with predatory individuals. She also recounted the advice given to her by Marilyn Monroe back in 1955.
This conversation happened when Joan, who was 21 at the time, was given the part in The Girl in the Red Velvet Swing, which was originally meant for Marilyn.
Joan remembers a chat she had at Gene Kelly's place where she chatted with Marilyn. According to her, Marilyn was casually enjoying a martini at the bar with no makeup on. During their conversation, Marilyn mentioned that Joan was playing the part she was considered for before and joked about her being too old for the role. She also cautioned her about the pervading danger of Hollywood and the need to stay vigilant.
Joan was able to overcome the difficulties she faced thanks to her resilience and skill in navigating these challenges. This was in part due to the advice given to her by her father, who suggested that one of the most effective strategies for avoiding predatory men was to simply laugh at them.
Joan was reflecting on her past experiences and how they differ from the present. She noted that during her early years, it was common for men in the entertainment industry to behave inappropriately towards their co-stars. People like George Peppard, Richard Burton, and Richard Todd were known for this behavior. Joan was glad to see that these toxic attitudes and behaviors have decreased significantly, creating a safer environment for women in the industry nowadays.
