Glazers ruin West Ham takeover dream as Telegraph makes huge claim

The Glazers have ruined West Ham United’s takeover dream as The Telegraph makes a huge exclusive Sir Jim Ratcliffe Man United claim.

Manchester United fans may despise their Glazer family owners but now West Ham supporters will too.

The Old Trafford faithful have opposed the Glazer ownership of Man United from day one.

West Ham have also had their own trials and tribulations with owners David Sullivan, David Gold and vice-chairman Karren Brady before the arrival of Czech billionaire Daniel Kretinsky as the club’s second biggest stakeholder last year.

While Man United fans have long yearned for their club to be sold to new owners, Kretinsky had been linked with an eventual full takeover at West Ham.

But it has once again been confirmed this week that is highly unlikely for the Hammers.

After spending £170m in the summer only to find themselves in the early throes of a potential relegation battle, many West Ham fans feel it will be impossible to compete consistently for the European spots with the likes of Man United without mega rich, ambitious owners.

So fans were understandably excited last month when it was reported that a billionaire with a net worth double that of Kretinsky, Sullivan and Gold combined was being linked with a West Ham takeover.

According to The Daily Mirror, Sir Jim Ratcliffe was targeting West Ham after a Manchester United takeover was ruled out and he missed out on Chelsea to Todd Boehly’s US consortium.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s net worth is listed at between £9.35-10.5bn. Kretinsky’s is listed at £4.27bn, Sullivan’s at around £1bn and Gold’s around £400m.

But now the Glazers have ruined West Ham’s takeover dream as The Telegraph makes a huge exclusive Sir Jim Ratcliffe Man United claim.

Overnight The Telegraph reported that West Ham-linked Sir Jim Ratcliffe ‘will bid for Manchester United’ after the Glazers put the club up for sale.

“Ratcliffe, one of Britain’s richest men and a (Man) United fan, had been the first billionaire to declare interest in buying the club in the summer, when rumours of a potential sale first surfaced,” The Telegraph reports.

“The owner of Ineos, the petrochemicals giant, is now expected to table a fresh approach although he is wary about overpaying as insiders suggest the Glazers are looking for a price comfortably in excess of £5 billion…

“Ratcliffe’s renewed interest in buying United, having supported them since boyhood and attended the 1999 Champions League final, is said to be serious.”

The report states that sources close to Ratcliffe say he always puts business logic before passion. So there may have been hope for West Ham that he would be put off Man United given the extortionate valuation placed on the club by the Glazer family.

But the bad news for Hammers supporters is that the same sources claim Man United are the only club who could change Ratcliffe’s mind.
