Jay-Z calls for rape accuser's identity to be revealed or case dismissed
Jay-Z is seeking the name of a woman who has claimed that he raped her when she was 13 years old to be disclosed, or alternatively, he wants the case to be thrown out.
The person making the accusation, referred to only as "Jane Doe" to keep her identity confidential, claims that the incident took place after the MTV Video Music Awards in 2000, supposedly involving Sean "Diddy" Combs.
Jay-Z, whose real name is Shawn Carter, and Combs both reject the accusations.
In documents submitted to the court, which were reviewed by NBC News, Jay-Z's attorney Alex Spiro contended that the accuser's choice to initiate the lawsuit using the pseudonym "Jane Doe" suggests a lack of sincerity in trying to uncover the truth about the accusations. Instead, he argued, it points more towards an attempt to achieve a fast and potentially unfair financial settlement.
Mr. Spiro stated that Jay-Z was "politely requesting either that the allegations be dismissed or that the identity of the plaintiff be revealed."
He continued by saying, "It's unjust and unfair, and goes against the rules of federal court, for the plaintiff and her lawyers to tarnish the defendant's reputation in ways that aim to generate media attention and cause the most harm to their public image, all while keeping the essential details about the plaintiff's identity completely concealed."
Tony Buzbee, a lawyer from Texas representing 120 individuals accusing Combs, addressed Mr. Spiro's request in an interview with NBC News on Monday.
Mr. Buzbee stated, "Anyone who claims that a demand letter, particularly the one I sent, is a form of extortion or blackmail is simply mistaken."
Demand letters like these are regularly sent out all over the United States. Trying to shift the attention onto me to distract from the actual accused will not be effective, and it certainly won’t scare us.
The federal lawsuit targeting Jay-Z and Combs was re-submitted on Sunday in the Southern District of New York. Initially, the case only included Combs.
NBC News reports that the lawsuit alleges a friend took the girl to the VMAs at Radio City Music Hall and left her there. Since she didn't have a ticket, she attempted to speak with several limousine drivers in hopes of getting entry to the event or the after party.
According to the lawsuit, one of the drivers reportedly mentioned to Doe that he was employed by Combs and that she was "exactly what Diddy wanted." The driver then gave her a ride, and after about 20 minutes, they arrived at a white house. There, she was asked to sign a paper that she thought was a non-disclosure agreement.
She reportedly received a drink that caused her to feel dizzy, lightheaded, and like she needed to rest.
Not long after, the lawsuit states, both Combs and Jay-Z walked into the room, and Combs remarked to her, "You’re all set to have a good time!"
She claims that during that time, Jay-Z took off her clothes, pinned her down, and assaulted her, while Combs and another female celebrity observed. She also asserts that Combs raped her while Jay-Z and the woman were present.
Following the supposed attack, she quickly got dressed and hurried to the closest gas station to contact her father.
She is asking for compensation that hasn't been specified.

Jay-Z addressed the accusations in a detailed message that he shared with NBC News.
He expressed, "These claims are incredibly serious, and I urge you to pursue a criminal complaint instead of a civil one. Anyone who would perpetrate such an offense against a child deserves to be imprisoned, don't you think?"
"If that's true, these supposed victims would truly be entitled to genuine justice."
He continued, "The only thing that truly saddens me is thinking about my family. My wife and I will need to talk to our kids, especially since one of them is at an age where her friends will likely see the news and have questions about these allegations. We have to explain to her how cruel and selfish people can be. It feels like we’re losing another piece of their innocence."
"Only the people in your circle of conspiracy theorists and pseudoscientists will buy into the ridiculous accusations you've made against me. If it weren't for the serious implications for children's safety, these claims would almost be funny," he continued.
Jay-Z and Beyoncé tied the knot in 2008, having first crossed paths in the year 2000. The couple has three kids.

At the same time, federal prosecutors in New York have filed charges against Combs for racketeering, sex trafficking, and several other crimes. He is currently being held in a Brooklyn facility and is set to stand trial on May 5th.
Combs' attorneys have rejected claims of rape, sexual assault, and misconduct, stating earlier: "Mr. Combs and his legal team fully trust the facts, their legal arguments, and the fairness of the judicial system."
"In the courtroom, the truth will come to light: Mr. Combs has never committed sexual assault against anyone, regardless of age or gender."
