The semi-finalists for the women's singles in the 2024 French Open tennis tournament are being determined. Jasmine Paolini, seeded 12th, caused a surprise upset by defeating Elena Rybakina, who was seeded fourth, during the quarter-finals on Wednesday (5 June).

Paolini won the first set with a score of 6-2, but her opponent triumphed over her in the second set by 6-4. However, despite this setback, the 28-year-old player remained calm and composed, and managed to win the third set by 6-4 too, at the Roland-Garros tournament. This victory secured her a place in the semi-finals of a Grand Slam event for the very first time in her career.

Paolini spoke to the audience on the court after her victory and expressed that the game was challenging. She added that her emotions got the best of her during the second set.

I made an effort to stay present in every rally, disregarding the events that occurred in the previous set. Eventually, I made a comeback, acknowledging my previous shortcomings and persevering onward.

"Many thanks to all of you for supporting me and cheering me on."

Paolini is scheduled to face either Aryna Sabalenka or Mirra Andreeva, who are currently competing in the women's singles quarter-finals.

Coco Gauff and Iga Świątek are the main attractions in the second-to-last round of matches. Coco had a thrilling match against Ons Jabeur on Tuesday (4 June) where she came from behind to win 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 in three sets.

Later that day, Świątek defeated Markéta Vondroušová in two consecutive sets (6-0, 6-2).
