Comedian Janey Godley receiving end-of-life care for cancer
Comedian Janey Godley has shared that she is now receiving palliative care as her cancer has progressed to a terminal stage.
In a video posted on social media Wednesday, the 63-year-old revealed that she will be receiving palliative care and moving into a hospice.
Godley expressed her gratitude to the NHS and everyone who has supported her, including her family, friends, and fans. In the video, the Scottish comedian shared, “I’m currently receiving palliative care and I'm in the final stages of my treatment at the hospital. The chemotherapy has exhausted all possibilities, and I couldn't continue with it any longer as the cancer has progressed.”
"It seems we are approaching the conclusion of this matter, and discussing it is quite challenging for me to express to others."
Godley, who gained widespread attention for her humorous parodies of Nicola Sturgeon's COVID-19 updates during the pandemic, announced in November 2021 that she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer.
In 2022, she received a positive report about her health. However, she later revealed that a subsequent scan had detected signs of the illness in her abdominal area.
Earlier this month, she had to call off her upcoming tour scheduled for this fall because of her stage four ovarian cancer. This illness, which had been manageable with NHS treatment over the past few years, has unfortunately resurfaced and come with some additional challenges.
In the latest video, she shared, "It's heartbreaking to realize that I'm nearing the end of my life, but we all eventually reach that point. I want to express my gratitude to everyone for standing by my family, especially my daughter Ashley and my husband."
The incredible support I've received has been truly heartwarming, and I can’t say how much longer I have before someone inquires. I'm not on TikTok, but I want to express my heartfelt gratitude for all the love and encouragement you've shown me. Cancer touches the lives of one in two people, and I’m one of those people.
Numerous friends and well-known figures expressed their support for Godley’s message, including TV chef Nigella Lawson, comedian Dom Joly, and former Scottish First Minister Sturgeon. Sturgeon commented, “I’m sending you lots of love, my friend. You truly inspire me.”
Lawson expressed, “Oh Janey, this is truly devastating. I appreciate everything you’ve contributed to the world and for just being yourself.”
Born into a life of hardship in Glasgow in 1961, Godley eventually became a familiar face on BBC Radio 4’s Loose Ends and hosted the series The C Bomb. In 2016, she was famously photographed at the Turnberry golf resort in Ayr, located on Scotland's West Coast, holding her controversial “unwelcome” sign directed at Donald Trump.
