Wrexham's captain, James McClean, maintained his stance during Remembrance Sunday by choosing not to wear a poppy and distancing himself from his teammates during the League One match against Mansfield on Saturday.

The 35-year-old Irish player participated in the moment of silence before the game, but he positioned himself separately from his teammates. He is maintaining his stance against what he considers a disrespectful gesture.

He initially declined to wear a poppy in 2012 and has continued this practice each year during the weekend when the football league honors those who have died in wars by donning a traditional poppy on their uniforms.

McClean shared that his choice not to wear the poppy is based on his belief that it disrespects Irish soldiers who died fighting against the British for their country.

He had earlier mentioned to the Belfast Telegraph, “I guess I was a little optimistic in believing that by being the first to speak up, I could help make it easier for young Irish men in the future. But it doesn't seem to be happening.”

"I talk to many individuals, and I've heard some athletes express their reluctance to wear the poppy. They don’t actually support the idea but prefer to avoid any trouble associated with it."

McClean acknowledged that he would proudly display the poppy on his shirt if it solely represented and honored the soldiers who lost their lives in World War One and World War Two.

His stance has made him a target for criticism, and McClean has faced continual abuse from fans. This situation is only exacerbated by his combative attitude and his critical opinions about the British monarchy.

In the game, Ryan Barnett netted the sole goal, leading Wrexham to a 1-0 victory over Mansfield. This win helps them maintain their strong start to the season, placing them in third position on the league table.
