PM considers ‘matter closed’ over James Cleverly date rape joke
No. 10 has declared that Rishi Sunak will not take disciplinary action against James Cleverly for his remarks about adding a date rape drug to his wife's drink, which were meant as a joke.
The Prime Minister's office stated that the matter has been closed as the Home Secretary apologized for her private comments.
The Fawcett Society, which advocates for women's rights, has called for Mr. Cleverly's resignation due to his "disgusting" remarks.
The Home Secretary cracked a joke at a gathering in Downing Street. The context of his speech indicated that he was sharing the joke in an unofficial capacity.
As stated in the Sunday Mirror, the individual informed those in attendance that adding “a tiny amount of Rohypnol to her beverage every evening” would not be considered against the law, as long as the dosage is minimal.
He stated that the key to maintaining a lasting marriage was to make sure your partner is "perpetually tranquilized so that they are oblivious to the existence of superior partners".
On the same day that the Home Office declared its latest scheme to fight against spiking, the aforementioned remarks were conveyed.
When questioned, the representative of Mr. Sunak stated that it was appropriate for the Home Secretary to express remorse for some statements that were reportedly made in a confidential discussion.
The topic is closed for discussion according to the Prime Minister. Him and the Home Secretary are now directing their attention towards the measures that the Government is taking to handle the increase in crime rate and ensure the safety of females.
The Home Secretary had previously expressed regret for his remarks, which his spokesperson claimed were made during a "personal chat" and were clearly intended to be a tongue-in-cheek quip.
The conversations held at receptions in Downing Street are usually confidential, but the Sunday Mirror chose to disregard that protocol due to the person's role and the topic discussed.
The comments were censured by the Labour party, and Yvette Cooper, who is currently serving as the opposition's home affairs spokesperson, expressed disbelief and horror at their content.
According to Jemima Olchawski, who holds the position of chief executive at the Fawcett Society, we shouldn't casually dismiss these comments as mere "banter" from men.
She stated: "Why should we have faith in him to effectively tackle violence directed at women and girls? We deserve superior treatment from our officials and he should step down."
Mr. Cleverly, who is 54 years old, came across his spouse, Susie, while they were attending university. They now have two children together. Recently, Mr. Cleverly's official role has changed from being the foreign secretary to becoming the Home Secretary, which happened last month.
During an interview with The Telegraph this October, Susie commended her husband's dedication as she discussed her struggle with breast cancer.
The individual stated that James has been remarkable in their support. They mentioned that James is consistently available whenever possible.
"When he became foreign secretary in September last year, I had already undergone a mastectomy and chemotherapy. I am grateful that I did not experience many side effects during that time, which was fortunate for me."
