Emily Thornberry slams James Cleverly as deeply misogynistic over his date-rape drug ‘joke’
"That is a very unpleasant and alarming prank and he ought to feel deeply embarrassed about it."
Emily Thornberry, who is a member of the Labour Party, strongly criticized James Cleverly who serves as the Home Secretary. She accused him of being "deeply misogynistic" and stated that he ought to feel "thoroughly ashamed" of himself for making a joke about providing his wife with a drug used to facilitate sexual assault.
During an interview on Good Morning Britain today, Thornberry expressed her opinion on Cleverly's comments. As reported by The Mirror, the Home Secretary made a joke at a reception in Downing Street about adding a date-rape drug to his wife's drink.
Furthermore, he made a humorous comment about the key to sustain a healthy relationship, which is to have a partner who is continuously under the influence of mild sedatives that would prevent them from acknowledging the existence of improved potential partners.
The Fawcett Society and Women's Aid quickly spoke out against his remarks. Specifically, the Fawcett Society, a group advocating for women's rights, described the comments as "sickening" and demanded that Cleverly step down from his position. This outcry occurred shortly after the Home Office, which Cleverly works for, had announced plans to address the problem of spiking.
Although many people have been demanding that Cleverly steps down, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has stated that he no longer sees the issue as ongoing since the Home Secretary has expressed regret for her actions.
When questioned on Good Morning Britain if she believed the issue was resolved, Thornberry replied with disbelief. She remarked that the Home Secretary - who bears responsibility for the safety of all citizens, including women - seems to possess a deep-seated hatred towards women. This is evidenced by his insensitive quip insinuating that he can only engage in romantic or sexual encounters with women if he drugs them. How amusing.
"That's not amusing at all. It's a really mean and scary prank, and he should feel deep shame for it."
