Jacob Fearnley secures maiden Grand Slam win on Wimbledon debut

Jacob Fearnley had a fantastic start at Wimbledon on Tuesday when the 22-year-old secured his first ever win in a Grand Slam main draw. This added to his incredible summer on the grass courts.

Fearnley defeated Spain's Alejandro Moro Canas with a score of 7-5, 6-4, 7-6(12) in front of his supporters at Court 8 in the All England Lawn Tennis Club.

Now, he becomes the second British player, alongside Sonay Kartal, to achieve this milestone in SW19. Sonay Kartal achieved this by defeating Sorana Cirstea with a score of 3-6, 6-2, 6-0.

When talking about his first victory in the tournament, Fearnley expressed his excitement, saying "I feel really good. It was a great experience to compete on these courts and to come out with a win was truly memorable."

Advancing to the second round, Fearnley is now preparing for an exciting match against seven-time Wimbledon winner Novak Djokovic, scheduled for Thursday.

Winning against Novak is a big achievement," Fearnley said. "I can't deny that I was keeping an eye on his match on Centre Court and maybe it affected my performance a bit.

"It might be nerve-wracking, but having the opportunity to play on the same court as a player of that caliber would be truly exceptional."

Fearnley played college tennis at Texas Christian University for five years before coming back to the UK and starting an amazing summer on the grass courts.

In the recent month, the 22-year-old participated in the preliminary rounds of the Rothesay Open Nottingham as a substitute. He managed to secure a spot in the main draw of an ATP Challenger event for the very first time. Shortly after, Fearnley went on to win the title, becoming the fourth British man to do so. As a reward for his victory, he was given a wild card entry to Wimbledon's main draw.

Even though it was his first time playing in a big tournament, Fearnley didn't seem nervous at all during his match against world No.188 Moro Canas. The young player worked hard to create chances on Canas' serve, earning 10 break points in the game and only needing two to gain a strong lead.

In the third set, both players held their serves well, leading to a tie-break. The Briton had five chances to win the match during the tie-break, but it wasn't until his sixth opportunity that he sealed the victory. With a powerful forehand winner into the corner, the Nottingham champion secured his first Grand Slam win.
