Scottish actor Jack Lowden is among the guests on The Graham Norton Show tonight (February 3). The star will join Graham Norton to discuss his role in the forthcoming BBC crime drama, The Gold.

The four-part series - the first episode of which will air on BBC One on Sunday, February 12 - is a dramatisation of the notorious Brink’s-Mat robbery, which happened in 1983. The robbery saw a gang of thieves escape with £26 million worth of gold bullion, diamonds and cash.

In the series, Lowden plays gangster Kenneth Noye, who was tasked with disposing of the gold bullion by melting it down and was later convicted of a murder he committed in a road rage incident in 1996. Downton Abbey’s Hugh Bonneville, meanwhile, plays Scotland Yard detective Brian Boyce, who led the investigation into the robbery.

Who is Jack Lowden?

Jack Lowden is a Scottish actor, who plays gangster Kenneth Noye in the forthcoming BBC crime drama, The Gold. Lowden started out in theatre, before finding on-screen acclaim in the 2016 historical drama War & Peace, an adaptation of Leo Tolstoy’s novel of the same name.

In 2012-13, Lowden played sprinter Eric Liddell in the stage adaptation of Chariots of Fire. The following year, he played Oswald in Ibsen’s Ghosts, adapted by Richard Eyre, winning an Olivier Award and the Ian Charleson Award.

Lowden played Nikolai Rostov in the 2016 BBC adaptation of War & Peace, before starring as a Royal Air Force pilot in Christopher Nolan’s critically-acclaimed film Dunkirk in 2017. More recently, he played poet Siegfried Sassoon alongside Peter Capaldi in Terence Davies’ 2021 biopic Benediction.

Where is Jack Lowden from?

Although Jack Lowden is Scottish, he was in fact born in Chelmsford, Essex. He told the Evening Standard in 2019 that he was an “IVF baby”, as is his younger brother Calum - who is a ballet dancer - and that Chelmsford was “one of the few places that was doing it”.

The actor was subsequently raised in the village of Oxton, in the Scottish Borders. He was enrolled in the Scottish Youth Theatre, in Edinburgh, at the age of 10, and studied at the summer school of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts during the summer holidays while he was in high school.

Who is Jack Lowden dating?

Since 2018, Jack Lowden has been in a relationship with Irish actress Saoirse Ronan, star of hit Hollywood films including Little Women and Lady Bird. That year, the couple starred together in Mary Queen of Scots, with Ronan in the title role and Lowden playing Lord Darnley, Mary’s second husband.

Ronan and Lowden only made their first public appearance as a couple, however, in January 2022. The pair were spotted together attending a tennis match at the Australian Open in Melbourne.

How to watch The Gold

The first episode of The Gold will air on BBC One at 9pm on Sunday, February 12. All episodes owill then be made available on iPlayer, allowing viewers to watch the entire series.
