Grealish thriving under Carsley to prove England value after Euro 2024 snub

Jack Grealish

Grealish was talking about the way the Three Lions bounced back from their embarrassing 2-1 loss to Greece at Wembley. However, his comments could just as well be applied to his own experience, as his impressive performances in the Nations League have been an ideal reply to being overlooked for Euro 2024.

During the European Championship, the England squad felt the absence of Grealish's fun-loving spirit after Gareth Southgate chose not to include the Manchester City player. This decision came after a season in which Grealish had inconsistent playing time under Pep Guardiola.

On game day, Grealish brings a unique flair compared to the other creative players on the England team, and he has demonstrated this with his energetic performances since Lee Carsley took over as interim manager.

Last month at the Aviva Stadium, Grealish casually scored in a match that marked the start of Carsley’s temporary coaching stint with a win over the Republic of Ireland. Then, just this past Sunday, he delivered another precise shot that helped England secure a victory in Helsinki.

At 29, Grealish is older than the other players competing for the same position in the starting lineup, and he has a significantly lower scoring rate for both his club and the national team compared to younger talents like Cole Palmer and Jude Bellingham.

His calmness and skill in fending off opponents ensure that England maintains possession and continues to pressure. Additionally, his clever movement off the ball set up his fourth goal for the national team.

Grealish is enjoying the benefits of being coached by Carsley, who considers him an essential part of the team. Carsley remarked, “Jack was exceptional in the match against Finland. It’s unfortunate that he couldn't participate in the opening game; I believe he would have made a significant impact against Greece.”

"Jack is an impressive individual with a vibrant personality—I'm genuinely happy for him."

Much of the criticism directed at Southgate and the England team during Euro 2024 focused on the belief that attacking players were being forced into odd roles and were being asked to perform tasks that weren’t part of their usual club responsibilities.

This was especially noted in regard to Phil Foden, Bellingham, and Palmer, while Anthony Gordon, the only true left winger in the team, had only a brief appearance in a match.

He truly stood out... his energy is contagious, and I'm really happy for him.

Lee Carsley discusses Jack Grealish

In contrast, Grealish is showcasing his ability to adapt tactically, highlighting his value in this Nations League tournament by finding the net from both the No10 role and the left flank.

He is gradually getting into the season with City, performing well for England, welcomed his first child in late September, and appears to be in a positive state of mind.

"The manager's approach allowed us to play more freely," he stated. It's uncertain how long Carsley will stay in charge, but it's clear that Grealish has greatly benefited from his time as manager thus far.
