Jack Draper ousts Matteo Berrettini to clinch career-first ATP title at Boss Open
Jack Draper secured his debut ATP tour level championship with a remarkable comeback victory against former world No.6 Matteo Berrettini at the Boss Open.
The tennis player, who is 22 years old, finally achieved success in ATP finals after attempting it three times. He accomplished an important goal in a remarkable way, triumphing in a match lasting two hours and eight minutes with a score of 2-6, 7-6(5), 6-4.
Before, the British tennis player had made it to the final of two ATP 250 tournaments. He was defeated by Adrian Mannarino from France in the Sofia Open finals held in November last year, and earlier this year he narrowly missed out on winning the Adelaide International trophy, which was eventually won by the young Jiri Lehecka.
Draper is soon to achieve a significant career milestone as he's set to become the latest British No.1. This noteworthy feat will push him up to the 31st spot in the global rankings, marking a personal best for him. His recent triumph in Germany has put him in a prime position to secure a seeding at the Wimbledon tournament.
After winning the tournament, the Brit has become part of a respected group of former champions who have also triumphed at the event. This group includes the amazing Roger Federer, who has won 20 Grand Slam titles, Rafael Nadal who has won the Boss Open three times, as well as Dominic Thiem and Marin Cilic.
When discussing how he won his first tour title, Draper remarked on the excellent final and congratulated Matteo on a fantastic week. Draper had noticed Matteo's impressive performances on grass leading up to their match, including two wins at Queen's and a Wimbledon final. Draper acknowledged that it was a tough match, but it highlighted Matteo's exceptional skills as a player.
I understand that you've also experienced injuries like me, and it has hindered my progress. This sport can be extremely rough, especially when you're all alone trying to figure things out and regain your top performance. Therefore, I want to offer my sincere congratulations and wish you all the best for this year and the years to come.
I want to express my gratitude towards James Trotman and Will Herbert, who have put in a lot of effort for this project. Although we faced several challenges throughout the journey, it’s important to appreciate these moments of triumph. We can only take a short break as we have a game on Tuesday, but I am grateful that my team was by my side.
Claiming my maiden championship in a competition of this magnitude is truly mind-blowing. Glancing at the roster of previous champions and seeing my name among them is a source of immense joy and satisfaction.
