Ivan Toney vows to stick to ‘crazy’ no-look penalty technique for England at Euro 2024

Ivan Toney says he was not nervous when taking a penalty against Switzerland and he will continue to use his confident 'no-look' technique.

Toney successfully converted one of England's five calm penalties to help them defeat Switzerland 5-3 in a shootout. This victory means that Gareth Southgate's team will now face the Netherlands in the European Championship semi-final on Wednesday.

In the final moments of extra time, Brentford's striker came on for captain Harry Kane. Without even glancing at the ball, he coolly slotted it into the bottom corner past Swiss goalkeeper Yann Sommer, who had guessed the right direction.

When Toney was asked what he was thinking when he replaced the England captain, he responded, "I wanted to make sure I scored my penalty!"

I thought there might be a similar opportunity to the last game, but it didn't materialize. Nevertheless, we had faith in the penalty shootout and Picks' excellent save gave us the momentum we needed. It was then up to the boys to finish the job.

I didn't feel pressured at all. I stick to my own routine, stay focused, and just do what I always do: patiently aim and score.

I always avoid looking at the ball. Some may think it's strange, but it's my usual practice. It has been successful for me and I will continue to follow it. It can be effective whenever it is necessary.

I am thrilled to contribute and understand that being patient is essential. Although I am usually very restless, I have managed to stay calm and patient throughout this tournament. I trust that my opportunity will present itself, whether it be stepping in as a substitute, beginning a game, or taking a penalty shot.

The confidence has always been present. It wouldn't have made sense to give up in this game after all the effort we've put in and the strong determination we've displayed. We just need to keep moving forward with the momentum. Hopefully, it will carry us through to the finish line.

The match ended in a 1-1 tie, as Bukayo Saka scored an impressive goal to equalize after Breel Embolo had scored first. England then showed determination during the additional time.

In the shootout, Cole Palmer calmly scored the first penalty while Jordan Pickford made a crucial save against Manuel Akanji from Switzerland.

Jude Bellinghan, Saka and Trent Alexander-Arnold all scored successfully from the penalty spot as England won their third shootout in four tries under Southgate. This proves the manager's confidence in the team's strategy was well-placed.

Reflecting on the situation, Toney remarked that the team was not able to be saved. This showcases the strong abilities we possess. We are all confident in our penalty-taking skills and have many players who are capable of stepping up to take one.

When Southgate spoke to the players after the game, Toney shared, "He praised us and told us to keep moving forward. There was one more thing he said, but I can't repeat it!"
