The match at Aviva Stadium on Saturday was completely full. It signified the beginning of a new chapter for both teams. Heimir Hallgrimsson was in charge of the home team while England had a new coach after Gareth Southgate. England looked good in their first game since their defeat in the Euro 2024 final in July. Rice and Grealish played well and helped Carsley's team secure a convincing 2-0 victory against the nation he used to play for 40 times as a player.

The temporary manager stayed quiet during the national anthem, as he had promised before the game against the country where some of his players used to play. Rice, who played for the Republic of Ireland before switching to England, scored early in the game, followed by a goal from former Ireland Under-21 player Grealish. The visiting fans sang "Two nil to the Irish boys" as the home team struggled to get back into the game. Carsley had a successful debut as the interim boss in the Nations League.
