Starc breaks record for most expensive buy at IPL
Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins played for Australia in the 50-over World Cup that took place last month. They were victorious in that tournament and also emerged as champions in the T20 World Cup held in 2021.
Kolkata Knight Riders just made history by purchasing the Australian bowler, Mitchell Starc, for a whopping 24.75 crore Indian rupees (£2.3m). This is the highest amount ever paid for a player in the Indian Premier League.
The offer made for Starc exceeded the previous auction record of the day set by Pat Cummins, who was purchased for 20.5 cr (£1.9m).
The amount paid for this player exceeded the £1.85m that England's Sam Curran received in 2022.
In other places, Punjab Kings acquired the services of Chris Woakes, an England bowler. Additionally, Delhi Capitals secured the signing of his team-mate Harry Brook.
Woakes was purchased for 4.2 crore Indian rupees (equivalent to approximately £400,000), while Brook came at a price of 4 crore Indian rupees (equivalent to approximately £380,000). This is significantly less than the 1.35 million pounds they spent on Brook in the previous year.
Following his recent decision to retire from playing cricket at the international level, David Willey, an all-rounder, was selected by Lucknow Super Giants and paid 2 cr (£189,000) for his services.
Gus Atkinson, a fast player from England, was recruited by Kolkata for a cool sum of 1 crore rupees (which is equal to £94,000). At the same time, Royal Challengers Bangalore also enlisted Tom Curran, a bowler from Surrey and England, for 1.5 crore rupees (£142,000). Finally, Rajasthan Royals opted for Tom Kohler-Cadmore, a wicketkeeper-batsman from Somerset for 40 lakh rupees (£38,000).
There were a bunch of English players including Phil Salt who opens and Adil Rashid who bowls spin and also a couple of Australian players, Steve Smith and Josh Hazlewood, who didn't get picked up to play for a team.
The cricket teams participating in the Indian Premier League (IPL) have already locked in their English players ahead of the upcoming season. The Chennai Super Kings have secured Moeen Ali, while Jos Buttler will play for the Rajasthan Royals. Other English players that made the list include Jonny Bairstow, Sam Curran, and Liam Livingstone, who will all be playing for Punjab Kings. Jason Roy is set to join the Kolkata Knight Riders, while Will Jacks and Reece Topley have been retained by the Royal Challengers Bangalore. Finally, Mark Wood will represent the Lucknow Super Giants.
Big Paydays For World Cup Players
Chennai Super Kings acquired New Zealand all-rounder Daryl Mitchell for a whopping 14 crore rupees (equivalent to £1.3 million), which ranked as the third most expensive purchase.
Franchises pay fees to their players in order to participate in the tournament.
CSK has also acquired Rachin Ravindra, who is a teammate of Mitchell's Black Caps, for a sum of 1.8 crore (equivalent to £170,000). The decision was made after his excellent performance at the 50-over World Cup held this fall.
The players from Australia were anticipated to be popular among teams after winning a championship in India. During the IPL auction, there was a shock when the bidding for captain and bowler Cummins, who is 30 years old, went beyond 20 cr. Sunrisers Hyderabad was victorious in a bidding war, beating RCB.
Starc, a 33-year-old cricketer, has been away from the T20 tournament for eight years. However, several teams showed interest in him during the bidding process, with Mumbai Indians and Delhi bidding first. Eventually, he was signed by Gujarat Titans and KKR.
The Sunrisers team acquired the services of Australian batsman Travis Head, who was named the player of the match in the World Cup final victory against India. The franchise paid a sum of 6.8 cr (£645,000) for his services.
Spencer Johnson, the left-handed bowler, was purchased by Gujarat Titans for a whopping amount of 10 cr (£944,000). Although he was not a member of Australia's squad, he made his debut in both the Big Bash and international cricket this year.
According to reports, Royal Challengers Bangalore invested 11.50 crore Indian rupees (approximately 1.1 million pounds) to acquire Alzarri Joseph, a fast bowler from the West Indies. Meanwhile, Rajasthan Royals enlisted the services of Rovman Powell, an all-rounder from the same team, for 7.40 crore Indian rupees (equivalent to 702,000 pounds).
Mumbai has acquired two skilled bowlers named Gerald Coetzee from South Africa and Dilshan Madushanka from Sri Lanka for a whopping amount of 5 crore pounds and 4.6 crore pounds, respectively.
Punjab has procured the services of an Indian pace bowler, Harshal Patel, for a staggering sum of 11.75 crores (£1.1m). Additionally, they have also invested 8 crores (£756,00) to secure South African batsman Rilee Rossouw.
Sameer Rizvi and Kumar Kushagra, two relatively inexperienced Indians in their twenties, have both secured substantial contracts in the Indian Premier League. Rizvi has been signed by CSK for a whopping 8.4 crore rupees (equivalent to £793,000), while Kushagra has landed a deal with Delhi worth 7.2 crore rupees (around £680,000).
