Recap | Revs close 2024 season with 6-2 loss at Inter Miami CF
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (October 19, 2024) – The New England Revolution wrapped up their 2024 MLS season with a 6-2 defeat against Inter Miami CF on Saturday evening at Chase Stadium. Luca Langoni and Dylan Borrero found the net for the Revolution in the first half, both with assistance from Alhassan Yusuf. However, Luis Suarez from Miami responded with two goals to level the game before halftime. In the second half, Lionel Messi entered the match as a substitute and propelled the home team to victory, scoring three goals and providing an assist.
Much like their first encounter with Inter Miami this season, New England kicked off the night strong, scoring a goal just two minutes into the game. Langoni sprinted onto a pass from Yusuf and took advantage of a deflection to find the back of the net, marking his third goal of the season within just 73 seconds. Langoni wraps up the season with five goal contributions in his first ten appearances in MLS.
In the 34th minute, the Revolution extended their lead when Borrero managed to slip the ball between the legs of Inter Miami's goalkeeper, Drake Callender. This marked the Colombian's first goal of the season in his tenth match. Yusuf, returning from an international break with Nigeria, assisted on the goal, collecting his second assist of the year. However, just six minutes later, Suarez scored for the home team, and shortly afterward, he found the back of the net again, bringing the score to 2-2 as both teams headed into halftime.
In the second half, New England kept pushing for a goal, with Giacomo Vrioni coming close twice but just missing the target. The tide turned in favor of Miami when Lionel Messi came onto the field in the 57th minute. With his very first touch, Messi assisted Benjamin Cremaschi, who scored to put Miami ahead. Bobby Wood seemed to have equalized for the Revolution after redirecting a shot into the net, but the goal was disallowed due to a handball.
Messi sealed the victory by netting three goals, making it impossible for the opposing team to catch up. As a result, Inter Miami surpassed the Revolution's 2021 regular season points record of 73, setting a new MLS high with 74 points.
