Welcome to Sportstar's recap of Day 2 of the inaugural Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test match between India and Australia, held at the Optus Stadium in Perth.
Day 2 - TREE TRUNKS
Australia began the day in a tough position after losing seven wickets the day before. The home team quickly lost two more wickets, but then their fast bowlers, Starc and Hazlewood, managed to stick around and challenge the Indian team.
After being dismissed for just 104, which gave India a 46-run advantage, KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal seized the opportunity and provided solid resistance during the second and third sessions. Together, they formed a formidable partnership, scoring 172 runs and extending India's lead to 218 by the close of play.
Labuschagne is back in the game. Jaiswal plays the ball behind square and manages to score a single. There are a couple of short deliveries aimed at Rahul, catching him off guard and hitting his glove as he wasn't ready for the height. He concludes the session and the day with a cautious defensive shot.
Cummins changes the length of his delivery, but Rahul successfully sends it to point for a single. Jaiswal is attempting to make contact but ends up swinging and missing. There’s a brief stoppage in the game now as it appears Jaiswal's right arm is cramping.
Maiden over for Lyon. Just one more over to go before the day's play concludes.
Cummins keeps bowling. Rahul attempts to hit a shot toward the leg side, but it's out of reach. He then tries to guide it behind for a boundary, but it takes a deflection for leg byes instead. Still, it adds to the team's score.
Lyon to Rahul. He scores a couple of singles, but his attempt at a sweep shot fails. The wicketkeeper dislodges the bails, but Jaiswal was clearly safe inside the crease.
Lyon is back in action, and that's another six! Jaiswal sends the ball soaring into the stands, setting the record for the most sixes hit in Test matches within a single year. What an incredible shot! They scored nine runs in this over, extending their lead to over 200 runs now.
India has scored 151 runs without losing any wickets after 51 overs.
Cummins starts his bowling. Rahul turns the ball towards square leg for a run. Cummins manages to get Jaiswal to make an edge, but it goes past the fielders and into the boundary. It also missed the slips by quite a margin. He delivers a full ball to the slips, and it's nudged to mid-on for another single. India has reached 150 runs!
Travis Head steps up to bowl. Jaiswal hits a shot to long off for a single. It’s a bit too wide, and Rahul skillfully cuts it for a couple of runs to deep third. A full toss right on the stumps is driven to long on. Rahul sends a full delivery through covers for three runs.
Cummins delivers a short ball that's too short, sailing over the keeper's head for five wides. Jaiswal then taps the final delivery of the over for a single.
Marsh plays a soft shot to deep third for a single, and Rahul reaches his half-century! Jaiswal receives a wide delivery and slices it to deep third, scoring two runs.
What a remarkable year it has been for Jaiswal!
AUS Vs IND, 1st Test: Jaiswal Ties Sixes Record
During the first Test match between India and Australia at Optus Stadium in Perth, Yashasvi Jaiswal matched the record for the highest number of sixes hit in a single calendar year in Test matches.
Six runs! Starc delivers a full ball aimed at the pads, which Jaiswal skillfully flicks to deep square leg, sending it over the boundary for six. Four runs! The next shot is a powerful punch through the point region, finishing the over with a boundary.
Four runs! Starc delivered a ball that was too full, and Rahul sent it through the covers, but it fell short of the boundary. He manages to grab three runs. Jaiswal nudges one towards mid-on and quickly runs for a single. That’s all they could get off Marsh’s over—just one run.
There were muffled shouts for a leg-before-wicket decision when Jaiswal failed to connect with his attempted flick shot down the midwicket area, as the ball was heading down the leg side. Jaiswal then played a short ball to fine leg, picking up a single. Mitch Marsh has now come into the bowling attack. Jaiswal hits a wide delivery from Marsh and cuts it past backward point for a boundary!
Mitchell Starc comes in to bowl. Rahul directs a shorter ball to deep fine leg for a single. Jaiswal tries to play a drive but edges the ball, narrowly avoiding Khawaja at first slip. There’s an opportunity for a runout as Rahul is fortunate to be spared by a wild throw. Jaiswal attempted to play the ball to the offside and started to take off, only to realize right away that there was no run available.
India's First 100-Run Test Opening Since 2004
On the second day of the first Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test at Optus Stadium in Perth on Saturday, India achieved its first 100-run opening partnership in a Test match in Australia since 2004.
Hazlewood is starting his first over. He has only given up nine runs in his ten overs up to this point. Lyon managed to get a single during his over.
Hazlewood bowls to Jaiswal, who taps it gently to backward square leg for a single. Lyon delivers to Jaiswal, who drives it firmly to deep cover. That's a half-century for Jaiswal! Rahul then nudges one to point for a single, marking the century partnership for the opening pair.
Hazlewood takes over for Cummins. The fast bowler bowls his first over. Lyon delivers to Jaiswal, who drives the ball off his back foot to cover.

Cummins gives away two runs in his over. Nathan Lyon steps in to bowl, and Rahul taps a short ball to point, resulting in a single. India is finding it hard to score quickly after the Tea break.
Cummins bowls to Rahul, who taps a single towards the leg side after receiving a short ball on his hip. Then, he delivers a short one to Jaiswal, who expertly lets it go by bending away. Hazlewood persists with his line targeting the fifth stump, but Rahul holds his ground and defends firmly.
Cummins is set to bowl the third session now. Jaiswal plays it safe and defends the first delivery. It's a maiden over to kick things off. From the other end, Hazlewood is in action. Lyon takes over from Marsh. Rahul steps forward and blocks the ball towards short third, scoring a single. With a fielder at short leg for Jaiswal, he nudges the fuller delivery to mid on for another run. Just three runs were added in that over.
Marsh is bowling from the other end. Rahul and Jaiswal are taking turns to face the deliveries. The young opener is playing it safe now. They scored four runs in that over.
Starc keeps bowling. The ball isn't making it easy to reach the boundary. Rahul placed it well between the slips and the gully, but it loses speed and only manages to earn three runs. Jaiswal steps back and sends the ball soaring over the fielders to the deep square leg boundary. That's a boundary—FOUR runs!
Starc bowled with a fuller delivery, targeting the stumps. This made Jaiswal have to adjust and direct the ball to the right of the bowler. He faced a bouncer next. However, his patience was rewarded as he refined his footwork and skillfully hit the ball through the covers, securing a four to conclude the over.
Marsh is tightening his line significantly now. Jaiswal, receiving a delivery that's high on the pads, manages to hit it away for a single. Rahul gets an edge but plays it gently, so the ball doesn’t reach the slip cordon. He capitalizes on the next delivery, hitting it elegantly for a four! The ball was short, and he sent it sailing over backward point.
Jaiswal hits the ball into the cover region for a couple of runs. He then follows that up with a boundary! Jaiswal lifts it over the wicketkeeper and it reaches the boundary. That adds three more runs, bringing the partnership between the two openers to fifty runs.
Rahul drives the ball to the deep square leg boundary for a four. He follows that up with a double. There's a no-ball, so Marsh has to try again. The ball is moving nicely but narrowly avoids the outside edge. Matsh ends up conceding eight runs in his opening over.
Starc is back in action. Jaiswal taps the ball towards mid-off to earn a single, bringing the total to one run for the over. Cummins takes over bowling again. Jaiswal manages to take another single, this time hitting it to cover. Next, he scores four runs with a strong drive right down the pitch, sending the ball to the boundary.
India is currently at 29 runs without losing any wickets after 11 overs.

Starc bowled a full delivery to Jaiswal, who returned it back to the bowler. A short ball targeted at the body was played fine for a single run, resulting in leg byes. That made it one run from the over.
It's time for the second half!
It's now India's chance to leverage their small lead after the first innings. Jaiswal and Rahul head out to the crease. The pitch didn't present many challenges earlier, so it will be intriguing to see how it performs in the second innings.
An occurrence rarely witnessed in Australia.

After a challenging first session, India successfully dismissed the home team.
Day 2 - Lunch (Innings Break)
India might think that Starc and Hazlewood hung around a little longer than expected, but they have secured a lead of 46 runs. Now it’s crucial for the batsmen to perform better in the second session and score over 150 runs. Harshit Rana had a strong debut with three wickets, while Bumrah took five. As they break for lunch, there will definitely be a lot to talk about in both team huddles.
Starc makes contact with Bumrah's delivery, but can't manage to send it past the cover fielders. He attempts a variation this time but pitches it too short. It's a no-ball. He aims for a yorker, but it lacks any significant impact.
Rana takes over from Sundar, and that’s all there is to it! He’s OUT! Starc lost his patience and decided to go for a big shot, but all he managed to do was edge the ball. It went high in the air but ended up safely in Pant's gloves.
Mitchell Starc was dismissed for 26 runs off 112 balls, bowled out by Harshit Rana, with Rishabh Pant behind the stumps.
Bumrah is back in action. The captain is still managing to get some movement in the air, narrowly avoiding the bat. Another over without any runs. Washington keeps bowling. Hazlewood focuses on defending his wicket and does it perfectly. Another over goes by without any runs.
Siraj is in action. Starc decides to leave the ball. It seems that Washington Sundar might be the next to bowl. India needs to break this partnership quickly. Starc continues to find ways to score singles. He angles the ball, but Hazlewood successfully defends it.
Jurel is positioned at short leg as Sundar delivers his opening ball. Starc plays some solid defensive strokes. As anticipated, he nudges it to the leg side for a single to retain the strike.
Starc isn't opting for any singles, hoping to hit something that’ll earn him more than just one or two runs. He doesn't quite make solid contact with the pull, but still manages to take a single. The score now stands at 99-9.
Nitish is back in play. Starc is clearly taking control of the strike. The line of the ball is much straighter, just missing the outside edge. Hazlewood remains steady. Australia is behind by 50 runs.
Siraj starts off with a fast delivery. Starc, aiming to be aggressive, swings but completely misses the ball. He tries to avoid it by ducking, but ends up getting hit on the shoulder. No runs scored in that over.
Nitish delivers a full-length ball aimed at the stumps. Hazlewood hits it straight, but Bumrah runs it down. They only manage a single. Starc continues to struggle with the big shots but manages to find a single to retain the strike.
Siraj takes over from Bumrah, and it's just one run scored in that over. Nitish Reddy is batting from the opposite end, putting pressure on Starc and making him adopt a more cautious approach. Reddy plays with solid technique, hitting it straight back to the bowler. Then he sends a high shot toward deep mid-wicket, but it lands safely.
Bumrah to Starc. The Australian is still aiming for a big hit. He only manages to nick the ball, which falls just short of the slip fielders. He takes a quick single to wrap up the over.
Rana keeps going. He delivers a fuller ball aimed at the stumps, but Starc manages to play it well. The next delivery is a bouncer that hits Starc on the helmet. He ducked a bit too low, which means he has to undergo a concussion check. Only one run was scored in that over.
Rana keeps going. He hits a shot down the leg side that has a zipper-like movement. The ball travels fuller in length, and he drives it toward the covers, but they don’t attempt a run. The next ball bounces once before going over the deep mid-wicket boundary for a four. He then sends the next delivery down to long leg for a single.
Bumrah is bowling to Starc and chooses not to play at that delivery. It had a slight swing, drifting away from the batsman. Nitish made a throw that nearly caught Starc, who was easily on his way for a single. Hazlewood steps up next and just misses the edge. A boundary! He finds the edge, and the ball slips past a diving Pant to reach the boundary.
Bumrah is back, aiming for what could be his sixth wicket. Starc is refusing to take the single. He swings and misses, solely focused on hitting big. No runs scored.
Rana faces Hazlewood. He shifts his stance, making his stumps visible, but the ball goes past both the bat and the wickets. He nudges it to mid-wicket for a single. Mitchell Starc discusses the mystery that is Jasprit Bumrah.
Beneath clear blue skies in a city that embraces both a laid-back lifestyle and a fast-paced environment, Australia and India were fiercely contesting in a grueling struggle. The opening Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series kicked off with excitement and anticipation, and as Friday unfolded, there were plenty of unexpected developments to keep the fans captivated.
At the end of the first day, the home team found itself in trouble at 67 for seven, having managed to limit India to just 150 runs in their first innings. Australia’s response was subdued, largely thanks to Jasprit Bumrah, who took four wickets for just 17 runs and bowled with incredible intensity, a performance he often brings to his matches. The Indian captain dismissed opener Nathan McSweeney and then generated an edge from Marnus Labuschagne, which Virat Kohli unfortunately let slip through his hands.
The onslaught wasn't over as Usman Khawaja was sent packing, with Kohli redeeming himself at second slip. The following delivery struck Steve Smith on the pads, putting the spotlight on Travis Head to stop the hat-trick from happening. Bumrah’s initial spell was outstanding, with figures of 6 overs, 2 runs, 9 balls, and 3 wickets.
