Russia Allegedly Fires ICBM At Ukraine Attack

It’s thought that this is the initial instance of this type of weapon being used, intended for launching nuclear attacks from afar, in the current conflict.

The Ukrainian Air Force recognized the missile as an RS-26 Rubezh, which can carry a nuclear warhead weighing 800 kg and has a range of 5,800 kilometers. However, there was no evidence to suggest that the missile was equipped with a nuclear warhead, and Russia has not responded to these claims. Reports indicate that the missile aimed at infrastructure in the city of Dnipro, resulting in damage to industrial sites and leaving two individuals injured.

Experts have referred to the reported use of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) in a regular conflict as something never seen before, emphasizing that these kinds of weapons are usually meant for strategic deterrence. They pointed out the serious escalation that could result from deploying such a weapon.

The launch from Astrakhan comes after a week of increased tensions, during which Ukraine has employed long-range missiles provided by Western nations to hit targets far inside Russian territory. Moscow has continuously cautioned that these actions could be seen as significant escalations in the ongoing conflict. Reports from Russia suggest that British Storm Shadow cruise missiles were utilized to strike the Kursk region, and it is also said that Ukraine has used U.S.-supplied ATACMS missiles.
