Neighbours star Ian Smith reveals he has terminal cancer
Ian Smith, known for his role as Harold Bishop on the Australian soap opera Neighbours, has shared the news that he is departing from the show after disclosing that he has been diagnosed with terminal cancer.
The 86-year-old explained to Australia's 10 News First show that he has pulmonary pleomorphic carcinoma, an uncommon type of lung cancer.
"A few months ago, I received the news that I have cancer—an aggressive form that cannot be treated—and the doctors believe I don't have long to live," he shared.
Actress Anne Charleston, known for her role as Madge, will reunite with Bishop for a few of his final appearances.
Smith mentioned, "I've undergone three rounds of treatment—though the first wasn't chemotherapy; it was immunotherapy, which is a relatively recent development in medicine."
"I’ve stepped forward to volunteer because I'm willing to try new things, and honestly, I want to live. I’m looking for a way to enjoy life for as long as possible. If they can help with that, I’ll be really grateful."
"Each morning, I find myself wishing for a pain-free day, as I understand that any discomfort marks the start of a rough time."
A message on the Neighbours X account reads: "Harold bids farewell to Ramsay Street."
We're sorry to announce that Ian Smith will be leaving his cherished role as Harold Bishop soon.
Ian first took on the role of Harold in 1987, and it has been a great honor to have him return to the show multiple times throughout the years.
The soap opera has hinted that the specific situation in which Anne will show up is still a mystery. However, fans can look forward to the exciting moment when the beloved couple comes back together one last time.
"Erinsborough is going to feel different from now on, but you can be sure that Harold will receive a farewell that honors his status as a legend of Ramsay Street."
Smith shared with 10 News First the story of his wife Gail's passing due to cancer in 2019.
"I truly believe that if that event hadn't occurred, I would be in a much worse situation today. However, I feel like my life effectively came to an end at that point," he remarked.
"I've witnessed countless lives lost."
"I've come across some great examples and a few disappointing ones, and I'm really hoping my experience will be positive."
Smith made his debut in Neighbours in 1987, portraying an ex-boyfriend of Madge.
Originally intended to appear in just a handful of episodes, his beloved character ended up remaining on the show until 1991, when Harold was swept away by the ocean during a vacation.
He rejoined the soap in 1996 and stayed until 2009. After a few guest appearances later on, he returned as a regular cast member earlier this year.
